Battle First Single - Crash

December 30, 2006 BattleIn this market where boybands are a dime a dozen, and new ones are entering all the time, Battle is the next big thing to look out for. Being winners of the Battle Shinhwa talent search, and handpicked by no less than Shinhwa themselves, Battle has a lot to live up to. And they deliver. Title track [Icarus] is dynamic, catchy and packs the punch that their tough image suggests. However, what really surprised me is the ballad [Icarus], which is delivered beautifully with strong all-around vocals from the members. [Flying Up] is quite possibly the weakest track of the three, as it stumbles uncertainly between rap and vocals. However, the powerful beats are still a worth a listen. Having leapt onto the scene with a bang, this single proves Battle's capabilities and is a clear sign of greater things to come from this group. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
The Inspector Wear Skirts II (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
The Inspector Wear Skirts II (VCD) (Hong Kong Version) VCD
(1)Our Price: US$5.99Usually ships within 7 daysMarch 4, 2006 FairIt is out of nostalgia that I bought this VCD. I remembered watching this film on TV as a child, and enjoyed it immensely. The movie itself is really a comedy through and through. If you are familiar with the Hongkong brand of 'mo lei tow' (read: nonsensical) humour, you'd know what I'm talking about. Basically, this film carries on where [The Inspector Wear Skirts 1] left off. Our girls are back training under their strict Madam. But this time, they're going to be joined by 4 more new members. To put it simply, the old girls and the new girls get off to a very bad start, with lots of bickering and fighting (literally). When they're not busy clawing at one another, the girls are trying to get their Madam hitched to either Kan-sir (officer of the all-male Flying Tigers squad) or Lo-sir (the smarmy inspector who comes to check on their training), as well as getting themselves hitched to the Flying Tigers boys. Towards the end of the film, some hostage plot comes up and all the girls and boys are off on their mission. Anyway, I personally find the film watchable. Yes, it is ludicrous. Yes, it features some very kitschy dance routines. And yes, the action is very limited. But it is nostalgic, and it belongs to a genre of comedic HK films that is fast becoming lost. The VCD itself is nothing to shout about. Just the film, and burnt-in English/Chinese subtitles. VERDICT : If you've ever watched the film, laughed at it, laughed with it, and loved it despite its shortcomings, then get it. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

March 4, 2006 ExcellentIt's taken me so long to get this concert DVD, but I'm glad I eventually did! For starters, I first became a Shinhwa fan some 7 years ago. Today, older and much less of a fangirl, I still have a special fondness for Shinhwa. On to the DVD now. It is everything as started in the product description, and then some. Concert DVDs are tricky things, but I think this one has got it all right. Firstly, the Shinhwa members themselves are worth all the money. Most of the songs sung in the concert are their later stuff. Just seeing them in their glory again is a real kick! Secondly, you hear the screaming of the fans, but it never overwhelms everything else. Which means you hear all the members' singing and speaking with good clarity. Thirdly, the English subtitles are an amazing help to those who do not understand Korean. The English subtitles are even present when the guys mutter anything random in the middle of the concert. Fourthly, the extras are lovely. I enjoyed the 'making of' clips, the rehearsals, the multi-angle function and yes, the pretty booklet as well! VERDICT : If there's just one Shinhwa concert you'd ever buy, this is the one. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

February 20, 2006 Great film, mediocre DVDI've finally had the chance to watch this film by Wong Kar Wai. [Happy Together] is very much about movement. The cyclic breaking up and getting back together of the two lovers Wing and Fai, the losing and acquiring of menial job and trick one after another, going to the waterfall, the lighthouse and back to Buenos Aires and Taipei. However bleak, life still moves on. Leung and Cheung do a wonderful job portraying the two on-off lovers as they navigate their messy relationship, and in the end, come to terms with the gradual separating of their lives. Chang Chen is good as well in the role of the cheerful young man that Fai befriends. Christopher Doyle does some really lovely work with the scenes and the colours. What lets the film down is the quality of the DVD, to be honest. While not exactly bad, Mei Ah can do much, much better in their treatment of this film. The subtitles are burnt into the film, and there are no scene-selections or anything. Just the film itself, and hard English/Mandarin subtitles. VERDICT : Get this if you're serious about watching the film. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
My Lovely Sam Soon OST (MBC TV Series)
My Lovely Sam Soon OST (MBC TV Series)
(13)Our Price: US$12.99List: US$18.99Save: US$6.00 (32%)Usually ships within 1 to 2 daysFebruary 19, 2006 GoodFirstly, I watched the TV serial and loved it, before attempting the soundtrack. So when I listened to the soundtrack, it was a case of revisiting something I already love. Most of the music you hear in the serial are included in this OST, so it brings back really nice memories of the serial. Songs that are not in this OST are the piano tracks that are played by the characters in the serial - those tracks are found in the OST Vol.2.
For listeners who have not watched the TV serial, this OST is mostly made up of love ballads and various instrumental pieces. My favourites include Track 3 (She Is) which is a mid-tempo track, and Track 6, a bittersweet song very nicely-handled by Ji Sun of Loveholic. The instrumental pieces are mainly piano tracks - gentle and easy-on-the-ears.
VERDICT : Get this if you're a fan of the serial! For the non-fan, this OST may not be that good as a stand-alone album.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This)
