More Yen pls?
| I really enjoyed SPL, but i have to agree with the person that said that the movie is short and special features on 2nd disc are poor. Also i remember seing some scenes on the web, or trailer which were omitted from the movie, like Donnie doing his signature (3) kick. Can anybody comment on this? I'll appreciate it. |

SPL
| This is one of the best best modern day martial art action films I've seen. Donnie Yen Is and will always be one of my favorite martial artists. I watched him as a child from reading about his mother (Bow Sim Mark) another legend to me. To see his accomplishments thru times has instilled a true fan in me. Samo Hung also. Been a fan ever since 'Enter the Dragon" And Jing Wu I 1st saw him in Tai Chi Master and was convince of his mastery. His 1st fight scene in the movie was hypnotic. I had no idea. Me and my wife enjoyed the movie from beginning to end. I look for movies that are in the same lines as this. I'm a practicing martial artist and for me the movie has to have either great technicues (preferably real time so I can see) Or artistry form that shows mastery |

The Don Yen
|
The story is simple, but what works here is the intense of the characters and aniticipation of action. Simon Yam is awesome as the inspector who wants to nail bad guy Sammo Hung, his charcter bore passion and intense, even if it wasn't in the script. Stand out is the fights scenes, one reviewer commented on decent fighting, the fighting(not plenty) was outstanding - Donnie Yen is in a class of his own no one can match him in the relm of film, why? He continues to improve upon his fighting ability using REAL MMA moves choke, take downs, and to be specific triangular choke holds, various mount positions (ground fighting control) WHOA!!. Yet again someone uses Bruce Lee's references but only Donnie can pull them off, the knife fight in the alley remind me of Bruce's Game of Death match up with him using a bamboo kane against Dan Inosantos nunchucks, check Donnies right lead stance and wing chun trapping hands dude, Donnie is merciless in this scene against his opponent. Why is this guy underated he made blade 2 fight scenes (saw it other day)and would kick Jet Li's ass. Don't bother with Tony Jaa he is skillful but his Thai moves are repetative and his films wack! Bruce has an unequalled charisma that of a dragon, if so Donnie has presence of a tiger. |

Best movie of 2005???
|
Hard Gritty Cop Drama? Check! Over the top vigilante action from borderline rogue cops? Check! A style evoking the early 90's cop dramas? None!! ...SPL, while featuring all the traits of the hard edged cop dramas from nearly a decade ago, achieves in style only. Did anyone miss all the cliche characters?? The Crime Boss who knows kun fu (Sammo), his right hand man whose some super ninja assassin, the pointless plothole of the brain damaged janitor?? What does it all play out to? A movie about hard edged cops battling a poor story while providing decent yet nonsensical action. Wheres my infernal Affairs??? |

Excellent movie for a poor DVD
|
As far as I'm concerned, SPL was the best asian movie for the year 2005 : simple story, with interesting characters (and casting !), and great "old-school style" fighting scenes ! The only blame I can make to this movie is that it's too short... But the DVD... What a crap. The disc which contains the movie is perfect, but the other... A poor making-of which lasts only 10 minutes (and his purpose is only promotional), a 20 minutes-press conference... And THAT'S ALL ! Where is the deleted scenes ? The second trailer ? Where is the featurette about the final fight scene (which I saw on the Web) ? Wilson Yip is a very interesting director, they could have made a real, long & interesting making-of especially for the DVD ! How disappointing ! 10/10 for the movie, 4/10 for the DVDs. |

Very satisfying watch
|
Defintely a guys film, the characters are cool, the fighting is almost as good as a bruce lee action movie (deliberate, fast and powerful), and the storyline is adequate. By the end of the film, you are left wondering about the justification for the characters. the rivalry between the good and bad guys is great. the donnie/sammo choreography steers away from the jet li retarded fighting style and creates far more slick, straight forward attacks, and with wu jing, donnie and sammo all fighting, you know you are in for action, that'll no doubt leave a smile on your face. simon and the rest of his cop gang are cool too, but unfortunately i'm biased to the martial arts visuals. Feel sorry for the fat boy who gets bullied by everyone.. lol... storyline.. i personally didn't think too much of it, but it was well shot, and it was the excellent usage of characters that done it for me... One great thing was they didn't try to make the non-martial capable arts actors do too much action , whereby sometimes you are left with worthless bits of film. It would've been great if the story ended so some of the characters could make it to a sequel, but i will say no more on that... get it and enjoy!!! |

Very Good Flick
|
After watching a bunch of kid "actors" pose and perform unnecessary cartwheels in every action scene in the disappointing DRAGON SQUAD, I was very happy with SPL. While not perfect, this flick does indeed feel like a return to the actioners of the late 1980s and early 1990s with good fight scenes and high melodrama. Each character gets at least a slight nod to make the ensemble more than simply cut-out figures, and the brotherhood that bonds the characters is solidly established. Sammo does excellent work in the villain's role, Donnie Yen has grown more "respectible" with age (this role reminded me with Leslie Cheung's similar fine turn in DOUBLE TAP) without losing a step, and Simon Yam grounds the entire film with his usual professionalism. In addition, the camera work is well done (the DVD looks very good), and the music soundtrack is excellent. Every once in a while, I become very tired with movies (whether from Hollywood or Hong Kong). Fortunately a film like SPL comes along. Highly recommended. |

Great action
| The fight scenes are awesome but would have liked to see more of them in the movie. The rest of the movie is very straight forward with no character development. Watch it for the action, not the story |

Very good, but should have been better...
|
As the title states, this movie is indeed very good, in comparison to what has been released as martial arts movies the past decade and a half, BUT, it doesn't match up to some of the classics (Iron Monkey, Drunken Master I & II, Once Upon A Time In China I & II, Police Story, etc., etc., etc.). It's "cool", stylish and hip, but it needed: (a) some more action/fights; (b) less "grandeur" posing/showing off from Donnie Yen; (c) more "eye-candy" (how come there's barely any hot asian girl/woman?). This movie had the potential to be a classic, but they missed... again, SHOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. |
