very good movie....
| At long last, this has been one of the better movies of all time. It's been a long while since we last have a good action movie such as this and with all the excellent and strong cast gave this show an incredible and good performance. To see Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen back into their good martial arts skills and Wu Jing when fighting with Donnie Yen.Sad ending but it's still one of the better ones. |

| Excelent movie. Well paced, strong story. We get to know all the characters in a short time. Great plot. It was nice to Samo Hung in action again. Donnie yen was awesome. The choreography of the fight scenes was great. All action movie fans should see this one. |

Old school martial arts crime epic
| I opted for the 2 disc special edition of this, and am not dissapointed. The film is about stopping local crime lord of the triads, wong po played by Hung Kam Bo (Sammo Hung) However the officer on the case must retire due to cancer, and Donnie Yen takes over leading the police unit trying to put wong po behind bars. A shooting happens and Simon Yam who plays a good cop and his unit, try to frame wong po and his men for it. The film is very realistic, and I liked the nice side to wong po, with his family and taai taai (wife) The only character in the film who is totally amoral and severe is Jet. Jet is the sidekick of wong po, and is a lethal martial arts master, with a liking for killing with a tanto. He is played by Wu Jing, who says an excellent few lines. I thought the ending was harsh and sad. Every character apart from "Jet" has a good side. Simon Yam has an adopted daughter in the film which is a very nice subplot. |

The very best in many years
| OMG, my friend showed me this movie and I was floored. This got to be the best action movie of the last 10 years. And though I never liked Donnie Yen because of his looks and overacting most of the time, but this time he has lost weight and improved in acting. He has redeemed himself totally and the action choreography is superb. The story is fast paced and everything is beautiful designed. I hope this movie puts HK back on the action movie map. Please, Stephen Fung and the likes, forget about making any pseudo martial arts movie. If you don't have the real thing like Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen, don't even attempt it. It just puts HK movies in a bad light. |

Delivers on more levels then one!

Wow...this movie was a complete surprise. I just picked up this VCD by fluke, and geezus it delivered bigtime! I didn't expect such a detailed storyline from what i thought was just another HK kungfu film (which lately has been very very weak the last 5 years aside from a few standouts). It's easy to compare it with Infernal Affairs because of similar theme of cops and dirty cops. Where I.A. concentrates on a deep storyline, SPL does have a solid story but it also kicks it up a huuuuge notch when it comes to heartpumping action. I was worried Sammo was getting too old for this kinda thing...@#$% did he prove me wrong, he went toe to toe with lightning fast Donnie Yen. Anyways, i really liked how everything in this movie happened for a reason, there weren't any stupid scenes where people were beating up people just for the hell of it. Not to mention, i didn't notice any wirework or cgi at all, just good old school hardwork/choreography. Like many has posted in their reviews, this sort of film is really rare in HK these days....too common are there action films now with PopIdols doing action moves they have no business doing. Please, stick with your romantic comedies and leave the fighting to the experts. Acting was top notch here, Sammo was just perfect as baddie, Simon was great as usual as i think he's the most dramatically creditable one in the cast. And what can i say, Donnie Yen really deserves to be on the top shelf of martial arts stars alongside Jackie, Jet, and Bruce. His style was not limited to the usual kicks/punches, he displayed tremendous variety of grappling moves also which made the fights even more real-life. I mean, SPL is set in a dark grungy crime ridden HongKong, it's a fight to survive, so don't look for your over-the-top flashy fly kicks. All the moves are believable for their power/speed/efficiency. Finally, i'd also like to say the VCD version was incredibly made. The sound and strong musical score was crystal clear. What impressed me the most was NO scenes getting all blurry due to quick moves or camera panning. The fight between Yen and Wu would've blurred out on cheaper VCDs, but it was fine here. Also subtitles were 100% readable thanks to the white with black edges. Well, in closing, I highly recommend this to ALL martial arts fans, u'll definitely be reminded why u love this genre. And to others, check out how much depth an action movie can actually have if done properly. And in this case, i can tell you, you're in great hands. 9.5/10 |

Great Action Movie With A Very Good Story
| This is a solid action movie with a very good story indeed, and the actings are great as well. As we all know, most of the movies coming out of HK these days are craps, with the pop stars in them and all. Not this movie, you won't find any of those pop-stars-who-can't-act-at-all here. What you will see in this movie is great actions with great actings and a very good story, buy it, you won't be dissappointed. |

Alright
Alright
| Just fast forward to the last 15 minutes of the movie to see Donnie Yen Vs. Sammo Vs. Henchman. THis is one of the best action sequences i've seen in awhile, there's really no need to watch any other part of the movie. |

It's a must see
| The fight scenes, specifically with Sammo Hung & Donnie Yen, as well as Wu Jing with Donnie, are two of the most intense sections in the movies. This goes along with acting skills of all of the actors are so believable, it is a must see movie. One of the best movies in 2005. |

Best movie of 2005? Second thoughts...
|
As much as 2005 came out with HK Flix, im not quite convinced to call SPL as the biggest hit or best movie of 2005. Watched this last night, and saw quite a number of inconsistencies, which sort of threw off my perception of it. In whole i can say i appreciated the movie, its action sequences are great considering the acrobatics and skill the characters had to have in order to pull it off. Story line was a bit shallow, no connectivity was ever made with the audience as well as with the interactions within the characters themselves. There were flaws i noticed (i.e. good ol knife trick when it stabs the inspector, donnie yens shoes during the last battle changes, so on and so forth.) Like i said, it aint no Infernal affairs, but at least its not Dragon Squad again. |
