Director: Xie Jin
Two women of the opera stage, who grow up together and develop a tight friendship as they learn their craft together, see their hard work pay off when they become stars in Shanghai in the 30s. Inevitably, fame leads to disharmony and the sisters drift apart. Xie Jin portrays his women characters with observed details and undisguised compassion.

A True Classic, Strangely Retitled
| The Chinese title of this movie is WU TAI JIE MEI ("Stage Sisters"--sometimes "Two Stage Sisters"). The first part of the title given on this page means "Outstanding Film About Life", and it is. (The "Stage Door Johnny" part is as misleading as it is bizarre.) Directed by Xie Jin, arguably the greatest of China's Fourth Generation of directors, the film succeeds on every level and cries out for a subtitled version which might bring it the international recognition it deserves. For a Chinese film fan, it is also depressing: it indicates the high level Chinese filmmaking had attained by 1964, on the eve of the Cultural Revolution, which all but destroyed the industry. It was also the final screen appearance (in a key supporting role) of the great Shangguan Yunzhu, one of the leading Chinese stars of the 1940s, and a victim of the Cultural Revolution. Well worth seeing. |
