Stanley Cox (De Niro) is a shy, hard-working man who can neither read nor write. His co-worker, Iris King (Fonda), is a struggling single mom whose sudden loss of her husband has left her alone, frightened and emotionally paralyzed. But when an unfortunate incident forces Stanley to ask Iris for help, their budding friendship soon blossoms into something much stronger. For as Iris teaches Stanley to read, he helps heal her inner grief, and in the process, these two once-lonely strangers begin to close on an old chapter in their lives, and open a new one...together.
