YesAsia Editorial Description

Jump! Boys and Exit No. 6 director Lin Yu Hsien waxes about love and serendipity in Sumimasen, Love starring breakout Japanese actress Tanaka Chie from Cape No. 7 and Wu Huai Chung from Crystal Boys. A scenic love story set in Taiwan's breezy southern port of Kaohsiung, the film takes on an almost documentary style as the camera follows the two protagonists through a wistful tour of the city and their hearts. Partly funded by the Kaohsiung city government as a means to promote tourism, Sumimasen, Love certainly does its job, painting a gorgeous backdrop with the sights and sounds of the city. Other than the two stars, all other cast members in the film are Kaohsiung locals, adding to the story's warmth and realism. Sumimasen, Love also rounds up some of Taiwan Cinema's best behind-the-scenes talents like Formula 17 and Twenty Thirty Forty producer Roger Huang, Blue Gate Crossing art director Hsia Shao Yu, and Golden Horse-nominated composer Cheng Wei Chieh.

Hoping to escape Taipei and acting for a while, Japanese actress Chie runs off to Kaohsiung by herself for a one-day excursion. There she meets film projectionist and aspiring director Huai Chung, who lends her a helping hand and $500 after she loses her wallet. Convinced that their encounter is destined, Huai Chung asks Chie to write her name and number on the $500 bill. In this game of fate, the day the bill returns to Huai Chung is when they'll meet again...

A lovely snapshot of a moment in time Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Sumimasen, Love" beautifully captures a moment in time and a relationship that is both as real and as wispy as the cotton tree seeds blowing in the Kaohsiung air. An aspiring actress and model named Tanaka Chie (played by Tanaka Chie) escapes the pressures of her work by taking a day trip from Taipei to Kaohsiung. In Kaohsiung, Chie loses her wallet. Part-time boat restorer, part-time film projectionist, and full-time dreamer Wu Huai Chung (played by Wu Huai Chung) comes to the lovely Chie's aid by giving her a $500 bill to pay for her lunch. Huai Chung asks Chie to write her name and phone number on the bill and says that if the bill ever returns to him then fate has determined that she must become his girlfriend.

Huai Chung and Chie then spend the day together taking in the sites of Kaohsiung and becoming acquainted. There grows a playful affection between them and, at the end of the day, when Chie must return to Taipei, parting brings a sweet sorrow. Will the couple ever reunite or will this day just become a fond memory? That's the simple story of "Sumimasen, Love" and, as told by director Lin Yu Hsien, it is a captivating one.

The real-life Tanaka Chie and Wu Huai Chung give affecting, textured performances. The cinematography is attractive without ever becoming postcard-pretty. Due to the film's laser-like focus on its theme, its 75-minute running length does not feel truncated; indeed, the story feels fully developed and ends at just the right time to leave the viewer intrigued. Reflection upon the film's characters -- the unlikely pairing of a beautiful actress and a projectionist with big dreams but no apparent means of achieving them -- leaves the viewer with a bittersweet taste that perfectly suits this little gem of a film. Very highly recommended.
