YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Stanley Tong's wildly successful collaboration with international action hero Jackie Chan gets off to a flying start in SUPERCOP, the story of an affable, tenacious, and unstoppable Hong Kong cop's quest to bring down the biggest drug syndicate in the Pacific Rim. Kevin Chan (Chan) and a stunningly beautiful female police officer from mainland China, Hanna Yang (Michelle Khan), pose as brother and sister to infiltrate the crooked operation and once there unleash their spectacular arsenal of high-kicking, bone-rattling kung fu. Chan, whose irresistible onscreen persona suggests a hybrid cinematic reincarnation of Buster Keaton and Bruce Lee, was already the biggest box-office draw in the world when SUPERCOP (originally produced in 1992) gained a U.S. theatrical release in 1996. The film displays Chan's dual mastery of physical comedy and martial arts while also (in outtakes shown behind the closing credits) showcasing his notorious predilection for handling his own stunts. Chan's daredevil approach was shared in the film by his breathtaking costar, Khan, also known as Michelle Yeoh, a former Miss Malaysia who would go on to solidify her reputation as a peerless action star in her own right with the stupendous critical and popular success of the 1999 film CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.

"...[Chan] has the hangdog insouciance of the early Dustin Hoffman..." - Susan, Wloszczyna (USA Today Critic), USA Today, 07/26/1996

"...Garish, frenetic and funny....Chan kicks, slices and dangles..." -- Rating: B - Lisa, Schwarzbaum (Entertainment Weekly Critic), Entertainment Weekly, 08/09/1996

"...Fresh and exhilarating....When Chan, with his sunny personality, tilts at life's comic absurdities, he's doing what Buster Keaton or Laurel and Hardy did long ago..." - Kevin, Thomas (Film critic), Los Angeles Times, 07/26/1996

"...Characteristically crowd-pleasing....When Jackie Chan is on the case, it's best to stand clear and let him do his thing..." - Roger, Ebert (Critic and screenwriter), Chicago Sun-Times, 07/26/1996

"...A fast-moving martial arts flick....SUPERCOP delivers action and laughs in equal measure..." - Rob, Williams , Total Film, 03/01/2001

Professional Review of "Supercop (DVD) (Two-Disc Ultimate Edition) (US Version)"

November 8, 2005

This professional review refers to POLICE STORY 3 SUPER COP - Digitally Remastered (Japan Version)
It was risky from the start. Jackie was tired of starring in, directing, producing and choreographing year-long mega-productions. Golden Harvest wanted to shorten his shoots and get more than one movie a year out of him. Enter stuntman and self-taught director, Stanley Tong. Leonard Ho liked Tong's first and only film, Stone Age Warriors, and tapped him to direct the third installment of Chan's popular Police Story series. Tong demanded total authority - and he got it.

First he hired Michelle Yeoh, a former action star who had married and retired from movies in 1986. Divorced and depressed Tong thought the role would be just the thing to cheer her up, so he made her Jackie's co-star, much to Jackie's dismay. Chan doesn't like his ladies to fight, and in Supercop he felt Tong and Yeoh were conspiring to show him up. He grumped for most of the picture.

Set in China, Hong Kong and Malaysia, Police Story III: Supercop sees Jackie's indefatigable Kevin Chan assigned to assist China's Public Security Bureau in arresting an international drug thug. Under the supervision of Michelle Yeoh's tough-as-leather Inspector Yang of the PSB, Chan goes undercover in the druglord's gang by breaking henchman Panther, Yuen Wah, out of prison and infiltrating the gang, Yeoh in tow.

The production was cut short in China because mobs of fans swarmed Jackie wherever he went. Things moved to Malaysia where Tong decided Yuen Wah wasn't up to his climactic fight scene and replaced him with Ken Lo. A stunt on top of a train had to be dropped when Chan was knocked unconscious by a helicopter, and while testing a motorcycle jump for Yeoh (who had never ridden a motorcycle before), her stunt double broke his leg. Add to that Tong's insistence on shooting in synch sound (requiring quiet on the set and slowing down production) and it looked like another disaster was in the making.

Instead it was Chan's best film of the 90s (although he himself generally dismisses it). Yeoh pulled off her bike stunt and stole the show from Jackie, rising from the ashes of her retirement like some kind of po-faced, martial arts phoenix. The foreign locations give things an expensive sheen, and Tong's eschewing of complex choreography in favor of wide, clearly presented action sequences brings a fresh feel to Chan's movie repertoire.

Tong and Chan went on to collaborate on Michelle Yeoh's Project S, Rumble in the Bronx and First Strike, but their work would never be the lightning in a bottle that their first wild, contentious, rambunctious, near-disastrous flick, Police Story III: Supercop was.

Not that super Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
This review is for the DD release (US edition). My original review of this movie was for the HKG version.

Transfer was clear, love Bey, interview was good but the rest sucks. As Ian said, some scenes were cut (for what reason??), even the Main Menu were altered and the music (now replacing the original score) does not, I feel, fit in with the movie at all. It's really appalling. I own the original HKG version but thought this DD release may include exceptional extra bits but alas I really regret buying this version.

A good package that could have been better Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
First of all, I love Dragon Dynasty, love Bey Logan, and have always been pleasantly surprised...until now. Instead of the precedent set by Police Story I & II in presenting the orignal Hong Kong cut of the film, SuperCop is presented in its truncated USA release form. To add insult to injury, the alternate HK footage is
not even included in the extras. To be fair, Dimension Films may not have access to these elements, but it sure would have been nice. All in all, the film has never looked better, at least the HK undubbed dialog with subtitles is available, but it just leaves me a little bit wanting. On the plus side, the interviews are fantastic, and give a great insight into Jackie and Michelle's recollections of the making of the film. Overall, not a near miss, but a near hit.

Jackie's still on fire! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Completing his trilogy on Police Story, Jackie now earned the respect and promotion he so deserved after cracking the big cases in PS1 & PS2. Bill Tung, still his friend and second-in-command, assigned him to the Mainland (just across the border) to go undercover (as a poor country boy living in Northern Territories) to befriend a drug boss (played by Yuen Wah). Yuen was tipped to escape and return to HKG. A couple of good stunt choreography with Jackie & Yuen making their escape, hiking the railwail uphill and then taking an unbelievable super glide downhill ala-circus-style.

His relationship with Maggie Cheung on stable ground, Jackie accepted the job but not revealing to her the dangerous nature of the assignment. He told a porky that he's been selected to go on special training for a couple of weeks. Actually he was sent to meet with Michelle Yeoh (with the Chinese Army) for a quick brief of undercover identity before being packed off as Yuen's contact for the jailbreak.

Watch out for the scene when Bill Tung disguised as the mother and Michelle pretending to be Jackie's sister. Both ended up on Yuen's payroll and next destination ....Kuala Lumpur.(to rescue the big boss's wife enroute to appear in court) . Meanwhile, Maggie worked as outbound tourist guide and things took a turn when Jackie accidentally bumped into her at the hotel swimming pool. All hell break loose when Jackie's & Michelle's identities were exposed. What followed were the fantastic rooftop chase with Jackie dangling from the helicopter as it makes it's escape and hovers above a running train and Michelle almost steal the scene with her bike stunt on the train.

Simply another fantastic collaboration between Stanley Tong and Jackie (the first being Rumble in the Bronx). Stanley loves location shooting and the 3rd will be The Myth.

If you love PS1 & PS2, you simply must have this. Remember, no stunts repeated!

Classic Jackie Chan Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
An excellent version! Transfer is sharp and crisp, and the sync is right on. The last 20 minutes of this film is slightly beyond belief! Michelle Yeoh, who came out of retirement to do this film, just about steals the show! The stunts are some of the most jaw-dropping sights on celluloid! Highest honors! A Must Have!
