Sophisticated musical debut

I have been listening to Sweet Sorrow's debut album at the same time that I've also been listening to the first album by Brown Eyed Soul. My reactions to these albums by similar vocal groups provide an interesting contrast. The Brown Eyed Soul album absolutely pops the first time one hears it; one is blown away by the sheer power of the group's virtuosity. Sweet Sorrow's music is more subtle. One isn't knocked out upon first hearing it, but it sneaks up on the listener. The CD rewards repeated playing. It features a wide array of pop styles, fine lead vocals by different members of the group, and some wonderful and surprisingly complex vocal harmonies. The album ranges in style from R&B to jazz to pop balladry. The musical quality is remarkably consistent; there isn't a single song on the disk that I don't enjoy hearing. In the end, I now believe that this Sweet Sorrow album is remarkably good and one that I will turn to often. I highly recommend it. |
