Another example of why some of the best films being made these days come from Korea. Park Chan-Wook once again shows the rest of the world how films should be made. Very violent in parts, great storyline and Song Kang-Ho,(JSA), proving once again why he is one of Koreas best actors! If you enjoyed Oldboy you have to see this film!

Consequence fueled by rage Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
It appears to be that whenever a director makes it big, he or she makes a labor of love. A film that most likely wouldn't be made if not for the previous one's(JSA) bench mark status. And in many ways I can see it in the SFMV(sympathy for mr.vengeance), However this gem of a film is somewhat of a hit or miss. Love it or hate it. Being that I call it a "gem" you can see that I loved it. The basic premise of the film is that Ryu lives with his sister whose dying, which can be alleviated through a costly sugery. Ryu with the best of intent, goes to a bargain doctor to sell one of his kidneys but gets jipped, left naked, and robbed of his filtration organ(kidney), so then begins that whole process of kidnapping the owner's daughter of the factory where he works. Ofcourse by the title, something dealing with revenge is bound to happen. But what prompts or fuels it? Well that for you to watch and find out. The performances by the three leads are extremely effective. S. Korea seems to be blessed with such natural actor/actresses. For the perfromances, deaf and "dumb" Ryu is calculating and determined but at a disadvangtage because ot his diablility. But yet actor Chin-ha Kyun, plays with him with such dexertiriy and realism by showing mere facial expressions. So Kang Ho shows how a how a loving father can become transformed into a hitman who works for revenge of a daughter(I miss his high pitched surprise vocal expressions in previous films), and Bae Du Na looks very attractive in this one. Normally I don't consider her to be good looking but there something about her in this film, perhaps it's those shorts or that layered hair. Either way, one of her best work in fact it may make you cringe it one scene. The DVD itself has a nice transfer, the films gritty look and realistic look is one of it's strong suits, the sound doesn't really warrent a desire for DTS or 5.1. The film is quiet. Your really just along for the ride with the characters. Thats what makes the film so good, is that the raw emotion is enough. It doesn't require a soundtrack to accompany the killing or the tragedy. The extras are not subtitled as usual. Though there are some nice outtakes , we don't really need subs for those, but yes, they would've been nice. So,overall, not a film for everyone. Some people I know would hate me or consider me officialy morbidly weird if they watched it and I told them I loved. It's really for the art. So think of this film as the same. If you feel repulsed, disgusted, depressed, and shocked thats what your supposed to feel. Kinda of like "Mystic River" on depressants.

this is a great movie,im so happy i got this!i had not heard of it before and decided to take a chance on it,
real gritty film making, love how realistic the violent scenes were none of this over top coreographed crap that comes out of hollywood day after day,i will certanly be paying more attention to what comes out of korea from now on, if you like revenge stories and dont mind brutal scenes you have to get this 10/10.

Brilliant and breathtaking cinematography! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie is one of the best movies I ever saw!
It has a really slow pace and is calm - there is no music in the background - but the images speak another language!
Violent, disturbing, breathtaking!
Well, not everyone will like and enjoy this movie like I did, because of the different kind of pace and storytelling, but I think you should give it a try!

Great DVD for an awsome Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This movie is wonderful. Perfectly filmed, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance tells us that violence always leads to more violence. Fullfiled with Diabolicus Ex Machina, the story goes far beyon from what we are used to expect from a "kidnapping movie". Amazingly well done, I shall recommend this movie for everyone openedminded who are looking for a hard but reflexive experience. The Korean DVD version is great aswell, the quality is perfect and has tons of extras. 9 out of 10.

very very dark (comedy?) Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
First of all, not for the faint of heart. I almost don't know what to say about this film. It is a tragic story of loss on many different level, but sometimes borders on dark comedy. You will be left with a numb feeling by the end, but I think that is kind of the point. Song Kang Ho's versatility is brought to the forfront once again. For any lover of his films, this is a must for the collection.
