Powerful Korean war film
|
"Tae Guk Gi" is a powerful depiction of the dehumanizing effects of war. Its presentation of battle scenes is realistic and very graphic. Its visual and storytelling styles are quite similar to the look and feel of the great HBO series "Band of Brothers". In addition, the acting by the film's huge cast is superb. Jang Dong-Kun and Won Bin, playing the brothers at the film's center, are particularly good. Unfortunately, the filmmakers are a bit too manipulative in their approach. For example, early in the film we see a happy family scene that concludes with one of the brothers telling the other that he wished every day could be like this one. As seasoned movie viewers, we know that their lives are about to be turned upside down ... and, of course, they are in the film's very next scene. Similarly, as the end of the film approaches, we see a series of extraordinary coincidences. First, the two brothers who now are deep inside North Korea, stumble upon a young man who had been their next-door neighbor in Seoul, but was impressed into the North Korean army. Then, after being away from home for many months, the younger brother returns home just in time to see his brother's fiance arrested for being a Communist sympathizer. Then, just as the fiance is facing a firing squad, the older brother returns from the battlefield to intervene. But the ultimate coincidence occurs near the end when the two brothers, now fighting on opposing sides, on a battlefield with thousands upon thousands of troops, somehow meet each other. For me, all these coincidences became too much; they strained my credulity too far. As a consequence, the emotional impact of the film's climax was undercut. Nonetheless, for its extraordinary depiction of war and its fine performances, I recommend "Tae Guk Gi" very highly. |

I am not a Korean and do not understand Korean languages, cultures or history. However, I am very impressed and feel deeply proud of this nation South Korea, after watching this movie. A great movie forever lives in one's memory. Doctor Zhivago, Gone With The Wind, Godfather and many many others. As for me, Tae Guk Gi falls onto this category. There are tons of good movies from time to time, fun to watch but they tend to slip away from your mind easily. So many talented professionals who all look like they were born in postwar years 1950's worked so hard together for one same goal - to make Tae Guk Gi a success, there's no turning back. Congratulations ! You all succeed. Not only just made a movie, but made history for generations to see internationally. For those who cried out harsh criticism like unrealistic endings, too violence, nothing but bloodshed. Please do take a minute to listen to Director Kang Je-Gyu, Producers Hana Lee, Sung Hoon Lee and Professor Park's interviews which were included in the Bonus Disc. You will find all your answers there. Nutrition label at back of Hershey chocolates, minor flaw, no big deal. How I know this movie ? JANG DONG GUN. A name to be recognized worldwide not just a good looking handsome face, muscular body frame but rather one who knows his crafts well. A skilled and gifted actor. Give him a camera angle and command "Action" and he will deliver and brings life to the character. His intense emotions and facial expressions are so powerful, lines to him seem like unnecessary. I hate to compare him with any other actors. But I have to. He has the same star quality as Russell Crowe ( I mean only the acting part ). The only difference is one is from down under, one is from South Korea. Chow Yun Fat, sorry about that, even though I am also from Hong Kong. |

This film is a real epic. I cant rate it high enough. About two brothers being forced to fight in the Korean war. No matter what horrors they face, their love for each other never dies. The fight scense are brillient and very realistic. The film is very well put together. I am a huge war film addict, but this is way up there, possibly the best yet. I warn you, it will even make the toughest viewer shed a few tears. |

so good, so sad
so good, so sad
| I watched this movie last night. It was such a great movie, depicting the relationship of 2 brothers in the Korean war. The movie is pretty graphic, with men having limbs blown off and such. But, I think it accurately depicts the horror of combat. The movie is pretty sad too, and I cried at the end. Won Bin is in this movie, and I think he is really cute....even if he is muddy and bloody half of the movie. Honestly, this is one of the best movies Ive seen in a long time. |

I love this movie
I love this movie
| I'm usually not fond of war movies, but this movie I really like. It has a really touching storyline. I'm alittle upset that it didn't get to play in other movie theaters though, because it's such a great movie. The two leading men are so hot. It's sad what happened to eunjoo in real life and in the movie though. Anyways, I give this movie nine stars. Its a great buy. No regrets in buying this movie. |

Not just a great movie and story
Not just a great movie and story
| Yes the effects, storyline and acting are great BUT this movie goes beyond the superficial fluff about how great this actor is, how great a film it is, etc. If you haven't seen it, see it. If you've already seen it, watch it again and think about the sacrifices, suffering, and hardships your elders went through which allows you to have the life you have (this is for the Korean people reading this). My father fought in the Korean war (he volunteered) my grandmother was kidnapped and tortured, my grandfather was kidnapped and was never heard from again (still missing to this day), this was done by the N. Koreans and Chinese Commies. My father was transported back in time watching this, brought a tear to his eye (he's not the crying type) he just didn't have enough words to explain everything, his emotions running high, he said it was just like that. I've been to some of the places he fought (in Korea) heard many stories of how most all of his classmates died in the war. Yes he also saw many a U.S. soldier die too. Bless them all......buy the DVD. |

Touching!
Touching!
| A very touching story between two brothers!! i Really like it, because it's not like usually movies, where it's all only about love between boyfriend and girlfriend...its about the love between two brothers, and how it can really drive you down a wrong path, and makes you do anything for them! this movie-taegukgi, is good, and the actors are great actors as well! I don't think you could've of pick any other actor in the world to play them, so i think that with the actors combined with the storyline, it was very good, yet sad! |

Absolutely Astounding!
| This is the kind of film that will change the world of cinema forever! The film is perfectly executed by Kang Je Gyu's direction and perspective. The acting of Jang Dong-gun, Eun-ju lee, and Won Bin is superb! Won Bin is amazing! This is one of my favorite movies of all time and should not be missed by anyone. New to Korean film? Tae Guk Gi is a great start for newcomers and it wont be forgotten. This 3-disc edition is housed very nicely in a study elegant case, and comes with extras and gifts to fill anyones fancy. Dont miss this cinematic milestone! |
