Nearly five years after the release of his blockbuster hit Shiri, Kang Je-Gyu returns to the directors chair with Taegukgi, the big-budget war epic that took the Korean box office by storm in 2004. Taking its title from the South Korean flag, the film details the story of two brothers who find themselves swept up by the tide of war. Believing that the future of the family lies with his younger sibling, the simple cobbler Lee Jin-Tae (Jang Dong-Gun) works out a deal with his superior officer: if he wins the Medal of Honor, his brother Jin-Seok (Won Bin) gets sent home. But for Jin-Tae to take home the medal, he starts volunteering for increasingly dangerous missions, much to the confusion of his younger brother. Even worse, Jin-Taes noble aim soon corrupts him, as he begins loving the idea of playing the hero a little too much. Eventually, his promotion to sergeant, the parties thrown in his honor, and the interviews with the media seem to go to Jin-Taes head. And as a result of this newfound fame, he starts to exhibit an apparent lack of regard for the fiancée (Lee Eun-Ju) he left back home. This change in behavior causes a rift between the brothers, one that will have dramatic consequences for both their lives as historys Forgotten War heats up. Shot in a style that is strongly reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, Taegukgi goes to great lengths to show the horrors of war in graphic fashion. Limbs get blown off, booby-trapped bodies explode, and surprise attacks abound, creating a strong sense that anyone (well, anyone except the leads, of course) can die at any moment. And while the jerky shooting style may put off some viewers, I found that the technique works well in highlighting the chaotic nature of battle, effectively inserting the audiences into the frontlines right along with its protagonists. Could the film have done some things better? Certainly. The frame story involving scenes set in the present does add a touch of historical gravitas to the proceedings, but in some ways, I found that it works against the suspense of the narrative: it would be nice to worry about who will die, not just why or how. And yes, theres a high melodrama quotient in the film, but fans of Korean cinema will likely already be familiar with this convention and accept it as is. And really, the film isnt a mindless affair, but a surprisingly nuanced, complicated picture of the Korean War. Certainly, one could argue that the depictions of the North Koreans and the Chinese are exceedingly unflattering, but the way in which the films heroes are portrayed goes a long way in balancing things out. As we follow the South Korean forces, we watch their descent into darkness, as their brutality soon turns into out-and-out war crimes Although in many ways, Taegukgi is earmarked as a commercial crowdpleaser, I found that it had a little more substance than most popcorn films in telling its tale of two warring ideologies and the common people destroyed by it. "Tae Guk Gi" is a powerful depiction of the dehumanizing effects of war. Its presentation of battle scenes is realistic and very graphic. Its visual and storytelling styles are quite similar to the look and feel of the great HBO series "Band of Brothers". In addition, the acting by the film's huge cast is superb. Jang Dong-Kun and Won Bin, playing the brothers at the film's center, are particularly good. Unfortunately, the filmmakers are a bit too manipulative in their approach. For example, early in the film we see a happy family scene that concludes with one of the brothers telling the other that he wished every day could be like this one. As seasoned movie viewers, we know that their lives are about to be turned upside down ... and, of course, they are in the film's very next scene. Similarly, as the end of the film approaches, we see a series of extraordinary coincidences. First, the two brothers who now are deep inside North Korea, stumble upon a young man who had been their next-door neighbor in Seoul, but was impressed into the North Korean army. Then, after being away from home for many months, the younger brother returns home just in time to see his brother's fiance arrested for being a Communist sympathizer. Then, just as the fiance is facing a firing squad, the older brother returns from the battlefield to intervene. But the ultimate coincidence occurs near the end when the two brothers, now fighting on opposing sides, on a battlefield with thousands upon thousands of troops, somehow meet each other. For me, all these coincidences became too much; they strained my credulity too far. As a consequence, the emotional impact of the film's climax was undercut. Nonetheless, for its extraordinary depiction of war and its fine performances, I recommend "Tae Guk Gi" very highly. |

JANG DONG GUN and TAE GUK GI
|
I am not a Korean and do not understand Korean languages, cultures or history. However, I am very impressed and feel deeply proud of this nation South Korea, after watching this movie. A great movie forever lives in one's memory. Doctor Zhivago, Gone With The Wind, Godfather and many many others. As for me, Tae Guk Gi falls onto this category. There are tons of good movies from time to time, fun to watch but they tend to slip away from your mind easily. So many talented professionals who all look like they were born in postwar years 1950's worked so hard together for one same goal - to make Tae Guk Gi a success, there's no turning back. Congratulations ! You all succeed. Not only just made a movie, but made history for generations to see internationally. For those who cried out harsh criticism like unrealistic endings, too violence, nothing but bloodshed. Please do take a minute to listen to Director Kang Je-Gyu, Producers Hana Lee, Sung Hoon Lee and Professor Park's interviews which were included in the Bonus Disc. You will find all your answers there. Nutrition label at back of Hershey chocolates, minor flaw, no big deal. How I know this movie ? JANG DONG GUN. A name to be recognized worldwide not just a good looking handsome face, muscular body frame but rather one who knows his crafts well. A skilled and gifted actor. Give him a camera angle and command "Action" and he will deliver and brings life to the character. His intense emotions and facial expressions are so powerful, lines to him seem like unnecessary. I hate to compare him with any other actors. But I have to. He has the same star quality as Russell Crowe ( I mean only the acting part ). The only difference is one is from down under, one is from South Korea. Chow Yun Fat, sorry about that, even though I am also from Hong Kong. |

Brotherhood

This film is a real epic. I cant rate it high enough. About two brothers being forced to fight in the Korean war. No matter what horrors they face, their love for each other never dies. The fight scense are brillient and very realistic. The film is very well put together. I am a huge war film addict, but this is way up there, possibly the best yet. I warn you, it will even make the toughest viewer shed a few tears. |

so good, so sad
| I watched this movie last night. It was such a great movie, depicting the relationship of 2 brothers in the Korean war. The movie is pretty graphic, with men having limbs blown off and such. But, I think it accurately depicts the horror of combat. The movie is pretty sad too, and I cried at the end. Won Bin is in this movie, and I think he is really cute....even if he is muddy and bloody half of the movie. Honestly, this is one of the best movies Ive seen in a long time. |
