鹿児島の桜島で、高校のスクール・カウンセラーをしている敏子は、自分の仕事場は学校のデスクではなく、街の繁華街にこそあると考えていた。自校の生徒だけでなく、他校の生徒にも分け隔てなく声をかける敏子は、今では繁華街の誰からも一目置かれる存在になっていた。そんなある日、敏子は左脚に激痛を覚えて倒れる。大学病院での診察によると、敏子の左脚は骨がんの一種に冒されていた。余命一年を宣告された敏子は、残された時間を子供たちのために使おうと考えるのだが…。
