八代将軍・徳川吉宗は、20年ごとに行われる日光東照宮の改修工事を、伊賀の柳生藩に命じた。小藩の柳生家は改修費用の工面に困窮するが、やがて『柳生家には万一のために莫大な金が用意されていて、その地図は"こけ猿の茶壷"に納めてある』という大変な事実が発覚する。だが、件の"こけ猿の茶壷"は、柳生源三郎の手から、次々に思わぬ人々の手へ。こうして、ひとつの壺をめぐってさまざまな人々の思惑が錯綜し、果てしない争奪戦が始まったのだが…。
