YesAsia Editorial Description

With the recent success in the genre of samurai film remaking, it seems timely to revive a forgotten master of the samurai films from early Japanese cinema. Tange Sazen: Hyakuman Ryo no Tsubo is a remake of a classic 1935 film of the same name by Sadao Yamanaka. Tange Sazen, the one-armed, one-eyed, ex-samurai swordsman is the creation of Fubo Hayashi, and was one of the most popular characters of the era. This remake is helmed by freshman director Toshio Tsuda, starring Etsushi Toyokawa as Sazen and Emi Wakui as Ofuji, his quick-witted wife. This marks the 34th film in the series of Tange Sazen, and this comedy of errors involves an urn that is worth a million ryo!

With a witty script that combines Hollywood style storytelling with classical Japanese humor, it is a treat for film fans that Tange Sazen has finally returned to our big screens!

Sazen is mediocre at best Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
As a western fan of Japanese film, I was dissapointed in the lack of action in this film. The acting was moderate to poor, with the characters of Sazen and his wife being the notable exception. The curio dealers were especially horrible in this movie, as was the child. The fight sequences left much to be desired. The plot is also fairly weak, and the movie ends on a lacklustre note. If you like Samurai films, Zatoichi or the Baby Cart series destroys this movie. Its too bad, because the character is great.

Entertaining.... Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In my opinion this was a very entertaining comedy/drama with a little bit of action. It was really funny, with some sad, touching moments. I really liked the way Sazen & his wife treated each other, very funny. I just didn't like the way the fight scenes were staged. I must say that if you're looking for a lot of action, sorry, you'll be dissapointed, and don't expect the fights to be anything like Zatoichi. This is not an action film.

A Comedy as sharp as his sword Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Tange Sazen is the story of a one eyed one armed swordsman his nagging wife and an orpan who upsets
their routine while clutching a ceramic pot worth one
million ryo. We know the value of that pot, but none of
the film's characters know that which sets into motion
some great sight gags and wonderful bits of action.
First conceived as a series of films in 1927 this film
has not been seen since 1935, and the wait has been
certainly worth it. Gorgeous scenery, fabulous costumes,
quick comic pacing and enough action to keep you interested this film hopefully is the first of a new series. Clear English subtitles allow the viewer to be caught up in the daily lives of this family, and the constant bickering of the wife who is not sure about the orphan, and that pot. A second disc on the making of the film is also included. A subtle comic masterpiece!
