A lush, lyrical parable about the modernization of China, TEMPTRESS MOON is the story of Zhongliang (Leslie Cheung), a Shanghai gangster raised on the sumptuous rural estate of the powerful, opium-addled Pang family. As a boy, Zhongliang, promised the life of a student, becomes instead a servant for his sister and her drug-addicted husband and a playmate for Ruyi (Gong Li), the female heir to the Pang dynasty. A permanent outsider, Zhongliang escapes the painful decadence of the Pang household and becomes a smooth-talking mobster, seducing women in the jazz-saturated clubs of 1920s Shanghai, but he is forced to face his past when hired to seduce and abduct Ruyi in a criminal attempt to gain control over the now vulnerable Pang estate. What begins as a routine seduction becomes more complicated when Zhongliang finds himself unable to escape his true feelings for Ruyi and crippling memories of his painful childhood. Cinematographer Christopher Doyle revels in the eclectic visual spectacle of a tradition-bound China cracking and hatching its version of the jazz age. Li and Cheung turn in inspired performances, their palpable onscreen chemistry igniting director Chen Kaige's magnificently detailed historical epic. EPIC.

TEmptress Moon Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
As you can see f rom my earlier review, top marks to this film but I forgot to mention that I'm very disappointed in that no Special Features were included in this dvd. I really expected interviews with Leslie and Gong Li (since this is their second teaming up since Farewell My Concubine).

Temptress Moon Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Leslie puts in another brilliant performance together with Gong Li. The unusual plot sees the Pang 'dynasty' family of old-money/estate in the opium days of modernised Shanghai. The life of an innocent youth (Leslie) was tragically determined when he was sexually abused and used by his sister and brother-in-law, an opium addict. After escaping this no-hope family to Shanghai, he became a gigolo to wealthy women only to blackmail them in a scheme organised by his 'adopted' family of mobsters. Events turned when he was ordered to return to the Pang family to seduce the now heiress Gong Li. Filled with distrust and afraid to show his true emotions and love after his sad teenage experiences, he swore he will never truly love another woman. When he finally faces up to his demons it was too late.
Leslie portrays this complicated character so well, you'll be drawn into his tormented world. Gong Li's youthful and innocent character shows what exposure and power can do to change a naive young woman but the most unasuming character, her 'servant' turned 'cousin' shows us how the influence of power/money and unrequited love can turn a perfectly loyal person into an obsessed, jealous, scheming and power-craze man.
An arthouse must-see!!

Indispensible Chen Kai Ge! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Mesmerising film charting the life journeys of three children growing up within the Pang family clan prior to China's 20th century revolutions. Leslie Cheung does his usual snotty conceited dandy character flawlessly however the real gem in this movie is the exquisite movement of the actress Gong Li whose innocence and seductive guile is so convincing to the point of enchanting the viewer into the same temptation of the Temptress Moon.

Stage casting along Kai Ge's direction is opulent and the characterisations are highly engaging. The stereotypical triad brothers in the Shanghai scenes are a little clich'ed, however the denouement in the fourth act of the film when Gong Li is brought to Shanghai to watch Leslie Cheung canoodle and deceive an eminent Shanghai women is fantastic: only later does the viewer realise that this is not the fulcrum of the film as Leslie Cheung's failed character returns to the Pang Clan, and then succeeds in poisoning Gong Li days before her wedding. Stirring and sophisticated narrative work and sumptuously produced film making.

A+++

Heavy going stuff Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This is one of those made-in-China shows which makes you feel that the Chinese who lived in the early 20th century are a really perverted lot when it comes to sex. There is the incestuous relationship between the young Zhong Liang which was forced upon him by his brother-in-law. Then there is Ruyi (Gong Li) who can't wait to lose her virginity so that she can hold on to Zhong Liang's (Leslie)love, so desperate is she that she "practises" the sexual act with her servant so that she can then do it with Zhong Liang. Also, there is the giggolo Zhong Liang who goes around seducing married women and then blackmailing them. Nevertheless, Leslie as usual puts on a convincing performance as the man who is so disillusioned by love because of his earlier experience with his sister, that he is afraid to love anyone till he meets Ruyi. Some parts of this show are rather heavy-going and a little draggy. I would classify this movie as "art-house". So, if you like Leslie, then by all means, buy this DVD. Otherwise, you may want to give it a miss.

Review on the movie and the previous subjective co Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Come on, you can switch the language to either Cantonese or Mandarin. If you have a probelm with you not so clever mind, you souldn't blame on the movie and give it only one star. It is really unfair because you are not judging on the main subject-- the movie itself and your comment would affect the other readers(if you care enough). The movie is not bad at all!
