Regarded as "the Godfather of Chinese television", TVB's 1980 gangster drama series The Bund was so popular that it spawned two official sequels in the same year, as well as several remakes, adaptations, and countless imitators throughout the years. It also made the leads Chow Yun Fat, Ray Lui, and Angie Chiu household names, and the theme song, sung by Frances Yip, an all-time pop classic.

Set in 1920s China, the original series stars Chow Yun Fat as patriotic university student Hui Man Keung, who arrives in Shanghai with little money and no place to stay. Keung meets Ding Lik (Ray Lui), an honorable man of humble background, and the two become bosom buddies. Later they save Fung Ching Ching (Angie Chiu), daughter of powerful crime lord Fung King Yiu (Lau Dan). Thus begins Keung and Lik's meteoric rise in the underworld. Their friendship is put to test, however, when they get into a love triangle with Ching, and Keung becomes Yiu's enemy when he finds out Yiu's secret alliance with the Japanese...

In The Bund II, Hui Man Keung and Ding Lik have become the biggest wigs of Shanghai after eradicating all their rival gangs. But Keung is assassinated soon after and Lik vows vengeance for him. Meanwhile, Lik marries a socialite (Gigi Wong) in despair after Fung Ching Ching leaves him for the convent. When Lik learns that his rival in love, Dik Chi Wan (Patrick Tse Yin), is also responsible for Keung's death, a deadly battle between them is inevitable...

When Ding Lik has almost got the entire Shanghai gang world under his control, he is challenged by his toughest threat yet in the final third of The Bund trilogy. Treacherous tycoon Lai Chun (Yang Kwan) uses the young hotshot gangster Gei Sin Yung (Wong Yuen Sun), the lover of Lik's aide Yip Chau Ying (Susanna Au-Yeung), as a pawn in his scheme to destroy Lik...
