Since arriving in Gotham City, Batman (Christian Bale) has inspired the people and made the streets safer. Organized crime is in retreat, and desperate to hold on to their way of life. Enter the Joker (Heath Ledger), a purple-suited pyschopath in white facepaint, his lipstick-smeared mouth permanently frozen into a grotesque smile thanks to two hideous scars on his cheeks. Joker offers to help the gangs by killing the Batman, but he has a deeper, more insidious goal: to take the city's newly-developed order and shift it towards chaos by terrorizing the populace into submission. Batman and his allies retaliate with an elaborate plan to trap the Joker. However, it turns out that they've fallen right into the clown's hands. While Batman and Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman) are busy trying to save the city, Joker has targeted the city's white knight, District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). Joker plans to drag Dent into his unique and terrifying madness, undoing all the good he and Batman have done for the city. With his allies thinned and hope dwindling, Batman has no choice but to fight alone against this new breed of criminal.
