The Deadly Breaking Sword elevated director Sun Chung to the martial arts director ranks of Chang Cheh. Starring the incomparable Ti Lung and Jackie Chan's kung-fu comedic rival Alexander Fu Sheng, acclaimed fight choreographer Tang Chia had a field day increasing the stars' venomous fighting appeal. Armed with the "Deadly Breaking Sword" technique, Tuen Cheng-tsin (Ti Lung) unites with thief Ko Mun (Alexander Fu Sheng) to defeat an assassin being "acupuncturingly" controlled by the evil Dr. Kuo.

I enjoyed every minute! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"The Deadly Breaking Sword" reunites Ti Lung and Fu Sheng, who had starred together in the previous year's "Avenging Eagle". "The Deadly Breaking Sword", however, is a much different kind of film than its predecessor and I, for one, really enjoyed its more loose-limbed, plot-driven, comic feel.

Ti Lung plays Tuan Changqing, a noble yet arrogant swordsman on a mission to eliminate the corrupt vermin who have infested the martial arts world. Fu Sheng plays Xiao Dao, a noble yet gambling-addicted young man forced into indentured servitude as a bouncer at a gambling den due to his mountainous gambling debts. (Fu Sheng's character seems to be based on Chinese legends of a monkey trickster character.) This odd pair ultimately teams up to battle Lian San (Chan Wai-Man), a halberd-wielding baddie aided by the evil Dr. Guo (Ku Feng).

Filling out this all-star cast are the lovely Lily Li as the proprietress of the gambling den at which Fu Sheng works, the lovely Shih Szu as Liu Yinxu, the new concubine getting everyone's attention at the brothel next door to the gambling den, and the lovely Kara Hui as Miss Liu's maid. (Note that none of these three lovelies -- famed for their many martial arts roles -- do any fighting in this movie.) Manipulation is one of the main themes of "The Deadly Breaking Sword", as we see Lily Li, Shih Szu, and Ku Feng all try to manipulate other characters to serve their ends.

While this film has plenty of fights for the martial arts fan, the story is driven by the complex interweaving of the various character's sometimes-conflicting and sometimes-complementary schemes. Fu Sheng's comic antics keep the film progressing at a rapid, entertaining pace. The film's scriptwriter also deserves credit for serving up a script filled with memorable lines. I recommend this Shaw Bros. classic very highly!

Ti Lung and Shih Szu shines! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The remarkable thing about this film is that Ti Lung is playing a different kind of hero.....one that is obviously arrogant and rude, compared to his usual swordplay roles. He carries it off marvellously. To offset his seriousness, director Sun Chung has wisely roped in Fu Sheng who is his usual clownish self. This means that you either love him or hate him. Shih Szu was supposed to take over the queen of swordplay title from Cheng Pei Pei after her swan song THE LADY HERMIT but over the years, she became more beautiful thanks to plastic surgery and improved her acting skills. Everything came together for her in this movie and she not only looks stunning, she glides through the screen like a classical beauty in the mold of Betty Loh Tih and Lin Dai. This movie is so much better than the usual Chu Yuan fare so I highly recommend you pick it up.

The deadly breaking sword Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
This supposed to be an action-packed movie with solid kung fu casts Ti Lung and Fu Sheng. However, it turned out to be otherwise; it had more dialogue than action. What a wrong choice of the director for a swordsplay saga! Watch this if you were a fan of Ti Lung or Fu Sheng.
