Yue Fei's place as the most famous national hero in the history of China is untouchable. Taiwan-based studio Union Film explored his legend with The Decisive Battle, and put the emphasis on his youthful adventures. The film depicts how the teenaged Yue Fei (kung fu star Tien Peng) learned martial arts, got his mighty weapon, and romanced his wife. Later he entered the national contest of martial arts, and had to fight his way out of a legion of challengers, including an arrogant aristocrat played by famous screen villain Chen Hung Lieh. The Decisive Battle was among the recommended films at the 9th Golden Horse Awards in 1971, and You Long, who played the 7-year-old Yue Fei, stood out and took home the Best Child Actor award.

岳飛七歲(游龍)，相士舒翁(儀銘)已察覺為天下界精靈。岳飛終日砍柴輔助家計，岳母則以沙地導識字。岳飛好學長至十歲，為私塾老師周同(曹健)賞識，義務教育，並授以武功，與王貴(田明)、王安(蔣政道)、湯懷(吳永威)、張顯(郭耀與)等一同習文練武。岳飛並在山澗射殺神蛇，因而獲得一支丈八長的蘸金槍「瀝泉神矛」。
岳飛年十三(田鵬)，奉師命參加丙黃縣武考，高中武生，復為縣主賞識，使其女李孝娥(韓湘琴)為岳妻。岳飛十六歲成親，仍苦讀經史，勤練弓馬，文武才事，與日俱增忘閨房之樂。
岳師周同辭世，岳飛赴京殿考，以圖報國，不料小梁王柴桂(陳鴻烈)故意逞蠻，在考場明槍暗劍比武，小梁王欲自取殺身之禍，岳飛則陷誤殺之罪。幸為宗則元帥(葛香亭)洞察實情，並憐其才，涉其罪發交真定府宣使劉韐，授為敢戰士小隊長，率領人馬前往剿匪，使其將功贖罪。岳飛與湯懷等智剿匪賊，表現頗英勇，匪首陶俊(李溯)懾服而降。殊知此時朝廷為奸人所制，杜充接任元帥，撤銷敢戰士營隊，湯懷心灰意懶，解甲歸田。岳飛則謁新元帥，力陳利弊，為未獲採納，岳飛以報國無路，壯志未酬……
