Jin Yong's swordplay novels have always been favored by producers and directors for adaptation into television and movies, and TVB actually turned most of his intriguing works into TV series in early 1980s. The Demi-Gods & Semi-Devils, adapted from probably the most eventful story written by Jin Yong, had to be split into two parts when it was aired in 1982 as the engaging piece contains just too many ups and downs. Starring the two most popular TV stars in the 1980s, Felix Wong and Ken Tong, Parts I and II of The Demi-Gods & Semi-Devils now come in one set with English subtitles, for the first time on DVD and in its full version!

Part I starts with a young and naive price Duan (Ken Tong) learning some magnificent martial arts by accident. However, he is more concerned with his relationships with three girls (Sharon Yeung, Cecilia Wong, and Idy Chan), two of whom he discovers to be his half-sisters and the third one finally leaves him for her cousin. The despair Duan befriends the head of the beggar gang (Leung Ka Yan), who live in agony when he learns that he actually descends from his nation's enemy...

Part II of The Demi-Gods & Semi-Devils sees the addition of an innocent monk (Felix Wong) who, like Duan, also acquires martial arts skills by accident. He experiences even more incredible adventures - forced to become the head of a mysterious sect and even the husband of a princess!

Clarification of "cut" scene Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
To explain the cut scene concern of the first reviewer, those scenes in the opening were not cut from the DVDs. They are scenes that were made but were never broadcast, partially due to the fact that some of the actors/actresses decided not to continue the filming back then (1981-82). Similarly, the kung-fu scene with the frozen tree was never broadcast, but was used in the opening.

Like my other reviews of classic TVB dramas, I'll only review the DVD quality. Review of this adaptation can be found else where on the Internet. Be warned, this adaptation doesn't follow Jin Yong's story closely.

The DVD set contains 12 discs. The whole set has 50 chapters; part 1 contains 30 chapters and part 2 contains 20 chapters. There's a trailer on the last disc. The trailer is basically an advertisement for LOCH, ROCH and DGSD.

The picture quality is similar to the LOCH/ROCH DVD's. The sound quality is as good as ROCH. There wasn't any fade-out of the female character voices like there was in LOCH.

This set also allows you to select chapters and sub-sections. You can also play through all of the chapters on a disc continuously. Unlike ROCH, where it took you back to the main menu after a chapter completes.

Aside from the fact that there's no Mandarin voice over, the quality of this DVD set is pretty good.

Though the advertisement says there's no cut scenes, I believe there are some scenes that are cut. I didn't see the original series on TV, so I can't be sure. But watching the opening sequence (song), I saw scenes that weren't in the chapters. For example, there was a fight scene between Hui Chuk and Yau Tan Chi, where a tree was frozen. I didn't see that scene in any disc. Each chapter was still 40 minutes each. So the cut scenes must of been a few seconds...
