Li han-hisang's adaptation of the classic Qing Dynasty novel will take viewers to the heightened pleasures of love and the despairing depths of betrayal. Timeless beauty Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia appears as Chia Pao-yu in her first attempt at a gender-bending role, an art she will wield complete mastery over in later films. Pao-yu is in love with his cousin, Lin Tai-yu (Sylvia Chang), but his family has other marital plans for him that will leave both broken-hearted.

Better than the 60s version
| Director Li retooled the huamei genre to produce this gem. The music played with Western orchestration sounds shocking at first, but the melodies are beautiful and there is a greater variety of tunes than one finds in the older huamei movies. As one would expect, the sets and costumes are stunningly beautiful. It took me a while to adjust to Brigitte Lin in the male lead; in her initial entrance, she looks very feminine and lovely! However, she does a solid job. For me, this is Sylvia Chang's movie. Her performance is absolutely heartbreaking. This film does a much better job than the 60s film of capturing something of the feel of the original novel. Highly recommended. |

Brigitte's first Male Role
|
Many thought Tsui Hark discovered her male look. No, Tsui must have discovered her male-look in this film. Watching it recently on the big screen again in the Singapore Film fest, the film is really nothing except for Brigitte and 1 song(and the Director's name). Just can't imagine from the same director who gave us the classic of all classics, Love Eterne acted by Luk Ti. You must watch this film together with the SB 60's version, just put Brigitte into the same role, or bring Luk Ti role to replace Sylvia, you will enjoy. In fact, Shaw Bros offered Brigitte the female role after knowing that Ivy Ling Po's film offered her the role. Must be Shaw Bros' ploy to make Ivy's film lost her. News are that only after arriving in HK, they realise she is much taller than Sylvia and reverse their roles, isn't it an obvious lie ? |

LI HAN HSIANGS LAST MASTERPIECE
|
With this last studio produced Huangmei Opera movie of its kind from Shaw Brothers, famed director, Li Han-Hsiang, was trying to break away from the mold of the Huangmei trend which ironically was set by him from the late 50s with movies such as The Kingdom and the Beauty and the immensely popular Love Eterne. With new music score arrangements accompanied by western instruments with melodies inspirited by the Yue Opera from mainland China, improvised actor movements with a fluidity that departs from the stagy theatricality of the early Huangmei movies and a much younger cast of actors/actresses in full bloom of pink youth, Li was trying to emulate the artistic achievement comparable to Franco Zeffirelli s version of Romeo and Juliet(1969). He succeeded in varying degrees; the casting of the invincibly beautiful Brigitte Lin as Pao Yu is still refreshing and inspired after all these years while Sylvia Chang paled in comparison with the other coveted role of Dai Yu, she still managed to give a competent performance. Although the storyline still sticks to the main plot of the tragic love triangle between the three main leads, the director did jabbed occasionally into the dark heart of the Jia family in decline; Wang Xie Fung is portrayed as the manipulative crowd pleaser while the grand ladies of the household are weak and cling hard to old values which subsequently led to the demise of Dai Yu. It does give an inkling of the richness of the original classic novel Hong Lou Meng by Cao Xueqin and nevertheless more than adequate as a coffee table accompaniment to the greatest novel of the orient. |

the last gem of the Huangmei genre
|
The last Huangmei offering from Shaw studio is finally here! It was a very shrewd decision to cast Brigitte Lin, the reigning queen of the Qiong Yao romances at that time as Pao Yu and under the meticulous direction of Li Han Hsiang, she managed to pull it off and made this version of Pau Yu uniquely her own. Sylvia Chang has the esteemed role of Dai Yu but seemed miscast and tried too hard to make herself a tragic figure. In the mad rush to complete the film for premiere ahead of the other competing version by Ivy Ling Po, many locations were skipped and scenes cancelled as evidenced by some unfilmed songs from the EMI original soundtrack release. Basically a one man/woman show for Brigitte Lin as other characters are under developed or completely left out and what a shame even the singer who dubbed all the singings was not mentioned. Applaud for the musical arrangements by Wang Fook Ling, which stand the test of time and still pull all the heart strings after almost 30 years! |
