Imamura works his magic Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"The Eel" is one of the more unusual love stories I've ever seen. Director Imamura Shohei, of course, is a fearless original, a conjurer who concocts utterly unique visions.

In this film, Yakusho Koji plays an ex-con, a man who turns inward after he murders his wife whom he catches in the act of adultery. Unable to trust himself in normal human relationships, he befriends -- of all things -- an eel.

While out of prison on parole, he opens a barber shop. The breathtakingly lovely Shimiza Misa begins to work as his assistant after Yakusho Koji's character saves her from her attempted suicide. Clearly, she has issues of her own.

The interactions of these two emotionally crippled people with each other and with their oddball community, in their stumbling efforts to heal and return to a normal life, forms the heart of this engaging and affecting film. "The Eel" is very highly recommended for all movie buffs who love idiosyncratic film experiences.
