Though now mostly remembered as a character actor with his signature mustache, Teddy Yip Wing Cho actually started out as a director for Shaw Brothers. After learning the tricks of the trade from Ho Meng Hua, Lo Wei, and his own father, prolific Shaw Brothers screenwriter Yip Yat Fong, Teddy Yip struck out on his own with a handful of directorial efforts in the early 70s. His comparatively short filmography as a director includes Girl of the Ghost Valley (1972), Black Tavern (1972), Thunderkick (1973), and the 1971 period film The Eunuch. As the title so succinctly puts it, this rare release is set in the cloistered halls of the imperial palace, the home to many ghostly stories of wrongful deaths and lonely spirits, amidst the quiet shuffles of the eunuchs. Pai Ying stars as the titular eunuch, a powerhungry official who is willing to go to any extent to achieve his nefarious goals. The Eunuch features Shaw Brothers regulars like Wong Hap, Tsung Hua, Lo Wei, and actress Lisa Chiao Chiao from One-Armed Swordman.

鬼太監桂德海(白鷹 飾)將楚王及王妃殺死，更追殺世子朱錦(宗華 飾)，朱錦得青竹叟(楊志卿 飾)相救才倖免於難。桂當年與啞巴月仙誕下一女燕燕(焦姣 飾)，桂恐此事外洩，竟派人去殺月仙母女。燕燕得青竹婆(黎灼灼 飾)相救，帶她住見青竹叟及朱錦。朱錦與燕燕相處日久，感情漸深；桂竟利用父女之情，假借燕燕之手殺朱錦……

A year before Lo Wei was to direct Bruce Lee’s first major starring role, Fist Of Fury, he wrote and co-starred in this tale of royal evil. He left the directing to Yeh Yung-tsu, who would go on to a notable directing/acting career himself. Here, Pai Yin, the star of King Hu’s classic Dragon Inn, plays the title character, a treacherous devil who wants nothing less than supreme power and doesn’t care if he has to murder the Emperor and use his own daughter as a deadly dupe to get it.
