"The Fake Ghost Catchers" uses its clever premise to brew up a ghostly, comedic kung fu delight. The tale begins when Du Luo, the jilted suitor of the lovely Huanzhu (Lily Lee), kills himself on the eve of Huanzhu's wedding. His ghost then kills poor Huanzhu and is determined also to kill Huanzhu's sister. Huanzhu's ghost persuades 'fake ghost catcher' Bao Tuo (Hsiao Ho) and his buddy Zhou Peng (Chang Chan Peng) to journey to her sister's town in order to warn her of the fatal intentions of Du Luo's ghost. En route to their destination, Bao Tuo and Zhou Peng encounter Wu Shunchao (Alexander Fu Sheng), a lily-livered and entirely irresponsible operatic actor, who just happens to possess some markings on the bottom of his foot that have magical properties for combatting ghosts. The trio determine to protect Huanzhu's sister (also played by Lily Li) against the human and ghostly forces aligned against her.

Fu Sheng's fans should be forewarned that their hero doesn't show up until the 38 minute mark of this movie, then is anything but heroic in this role. During the many well-choreographed fights, Fu Sheng shows off few of his fighting skills; he instead cowers in fear. It is hilarious Hsiao Ho and Fu Sheng's real-life brother Chang Chan Peng who take the lead in the fight scenes, accomplishing a series of acrobatic moves that are a joy to see. Indeed, although Fu Sheng gets top billing, this really is Hsiao Ho's and Chang Chan Peng's movie and they have more than enough talent and charm to carry the day.

The production looks splendid on this remastered DVD release and director Lau Kar Wing seamlessly juggles the comedic, supernatural, and kung fu elements of this thoroughly entertaining movie. "The Fake Ghost Catchers" is terrific (and very silly) entertainment for the whole family.

Once again, Fu Sheng had proven himself a successful comedian in this movie. So do expect lots of thrills and laughs in this "cosmic comedy". Interesting plot and superb fights - highly recommended.
