Cheung Sau-kuen and Shum Ka-chun have been married for three years and are still an affectionate couple. Kuen obeys the rules for women and is never lazy in serving her mother-in-law. Madam Shum despises her eldest daughter-in-law Kuen for her lowly background and her inability to bear a child. She presses her son Chun to divorce Kuen and sit the imperial exam to seek fame and fortune. Ka-chun does his best to object and has frequent quarrels with his mother. Realizing that her mother-in-law's order cannot be violated, Kuen takes the initiative to leave her husband. She has no relatives other than the Shum family and is alone and helpless after she has left. She nearly committed suicide in order to end the remaining years of her life. Fortunately, she pulls herself together, earns her own living and manages to lead a stable life.
After Chun has departed with his wife, he goes to the imperial capital to sit for examinations. Meanwhile, the village is flooded. Putting up at her second daughter-in-law Lee Kam-chi's, Shum is subject to her harsh treatment. Kuen bears no grudges and serves her like a filial daughter. Shum is moved by Kuen's respect and obedience to her and reconciles with her. Chun returns as the Number One Scholar. Kuen even pleads with Shum to forgive Chi and her family who have been confiscated of their fortune by the court. The family is happily reunited.
