Summer, 1974. On her way back from family visit in the Kunming province, young female intellectual Xing-yu (Shu Qi) meets the man she won't forget for the rest of her life: young rebellious intellectual Si Mong (Liu Hua). Xing Yu's childhood friend and lover Yuan Ding Guo (Fang Bin) is the leader of her platoon. At the busy Red Post Town market, Yuan and his friends get into a bloody fight with Si Mong, and sustain injury. Xing Yu subsequently gets caught between the two hostile groups. Hoping to negotiate a truce, Xing yu approaches Si Mong only to be drawn further into a forbidden and passionate relationship. Divinity, however, decides to intervene. It seems the social upheaval of the time, not Yuan, has control over Xing Yu's destiny. Pouring rain eventually puts out the fiery passion that livens up the little hut. When violence finally subsides, one's heart also dies....

Well-told love triangle story

There's an old saying about jokes: "It's all in how you tell 'em." In other words, it isn't the content of the joke, but the joke-telling style that will determine whether the joke gets laughs. Something similar is true about romantic movies; it is all in how you tell the story. "The Foliage" tells a very familiar story: A beautiful young woman (Shu Qi) is torn between the affections of a stable, dependable man (Fang Bin) and a rakish, romantic "bad boy" (Liu Ye). We've seen stories like this a million times, but here it is set amid a group of "sent down" educated young people during the Cultural Revolution. And here it is performed by a terrific cast. The look and feel of this film will be familiar to anyone who has seen "The Little Chinese Seamstress". It is set in a very similar milieu. What sets this film apart is Shu Qi, a galvanizing screen presence. The film's conflict really takes place inside Shu Qi's character, who is torn between her heart's yearning for Liu Ye and her head's inclination for the security of Fang Bin. The film does an excellent job of depicting this conflict, both during the "sent down" years and subsequently during the characters' adult lives. I enjoyed "The Foliage" very much and believe that you will, too. |

Very average flick
| None of the actors were that bad, and Shu Qi could be a convincing "zhi qing", but alas, the story is just so uncompelling that the movie was really boring. Perhaps if there were more depth to the plot the actors would have been able to employ their talents more. Suitable for watching while you're simultaneously doing something else (like flipping through a magazine or ironing your clothes). |
