Exceptionally good film of the geisha world Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Of the ten Gosha Hideo-directed films I've seen, "The Geisha" definitely has the most extravagantly gorgeous visual imagery and packs the greatest emotional impact. The film's story revolves around Daikatsu (Ogata Ken) and the women in his life. Daikatsu is a flesh peddler; he buys young women, then sells them to geisha houses or prostitution dens. Indeed, he sold his own daughter, Momokawa (Ikegami Kimiko), to a geisha house when she was a small girl and she now has grown to become the house's top geisha, with an abiding hatred for her father. Tamako (Asano Atsuko), Daikatsu's beautiful young mistress, is eager to do something with her life, even if it means entering the worlds of geisha or prostitution. Ode-san (Baisho Mitsuko), the woman who runs his daughter's geisha house struggles to manage a straying husband, an unruly bunch of geishas, and her complex, undefined relationship with Daikatsu. Oh, and Daikatsu has a wife, too.

Much of the film consists of the delicate (and sometimes indelicate) dance of these interweaving relationships. But there is a darker shadow on the horizon. A powerful gang from Osaka wants to horn in on the action in the flesh trade in Daikatsu's small island town ... and Daikatsu is determined to keep them out. The consequences are sure to be dire.

Director Gosha Hideo won his only Best Director award from the Japanese Academy of Film for "The Geisha". Ikegami Kimiko was nominated for a best actress award; both Baisho Mitsuko and Asano Atsuko were nominated for best supporting actress (Miss Asano won). And, rest assured, that critical recognition was well-deserved; the performances in this film really are remarkable. Also noteworthy is the lushly melodic soundtrack music composed by Masaru Sato. It really all comes together in this movie; and the film looks great in this sparkling Animeigo DVD release. I recommend "The Geisha" very, very highly.
