Casting of non asian actors ?
|
The casting of non asian actors in the principal roles could never happen if this film were made today, but at the time in America when The Good Earth was produced (1937), Paul Muni and Louise Rainer were at the height of popularity. Muni, who was jewish and normally played "tough guys" as well as Rainer who was from Europe and spoke with a german accent were convincingly transformed by the magic of Hollywood make-up artists and vocal coaches, at least to the caucasian eye and ear. There were, however, at least a few asian actors in Hollywood who could have filled these roles had it not been for the apparent racism that was rampant throughout the US prior to World War 2. One such was Anna May Wong, a popular Chinese actress during the 1930s who many thought should have had the main role as O-long. Although she was seriously considered for the part, the censors strictly prohibited the portrayal of a married couple by people of different races. This would have meant that an Asian would have had to replace Paul Muni, but his star power was too great to sacrafice for the political correctness of the time. Fortunately, many of the secondary parts were played by Asians, which showed that at least Hollywood was making an effort to include Asian actors in a film that was high budget and expected to be a block buster. Interestingly, as the war with Germany and Japan broke out, Louise Rainer herself, a two time Oscar winner, had to proclaim to be Austrian to appease Americans and their ill will towards everthing German. She never regained her popularity. If this film were made today as a Hollywood epic, I wonder who they would cast..Lucy Lu and...? Perhaps, but it's unlikely that a film about poor Chinese farmers from the past would even be made today. Although racial barriers in America have been broken, ironically the American public has never been as disinterested as it is now in anything beyond its borders. |
