Prolific director Wong Tin Lam assembles much of the cast from his Cathay Studios hit The Greatest Civil War on Earth for the unrelated follow-up film, The Greatest Wedding on Earth! Liu Enja stars as the patriarch of an immigrant family to Hong Kong from Northern China, who arrives with his wife Wang Lai and his two children Lai Zhen and Ding Hao. The family opens up a Northern cuisine restaurant across the street from a local Hong Kong family restaurant, run by Leung Sing Bo, his wife Ma Hsiao Ying, and children Bai Lu Ming and Cheung Ching. Sparks fly between the two families thanks to their competing businesses and different cultures, but a bigger problem arises...love! The grown children from either side begin to fall in love with their counterparts, leading to the inevitable clash between the parents! Can accord between these Chinese of differing origins be reached? The Greatest Wedding on Earth satirizes the conflicts between Cantonese-speaking locals and Mandarin-speaking Northerners with much of the same comic success as the earlier The Greatest Civil War on Earth, and both rank among the most beloved films of the Cathay Studios era!

Since the success of the comedy The Greatest Civil War on Earth, there aroused a popular demand for films of similar lines. In response to this, MP&GI had finally decided to have a second attempt, another new comedy satirizing the conflict between the Cantonese and the Northerners. Entitled The Greatest Wedding on Earth, script written by Eileen Chang based on a story by Nellie Qin Yu, starring Kitty Ding Hao, Christine Pai Lu-ming, Kelly Lei Zhen, Cheung Ching, Leung Sing-por and Liu Enjia, was specially tailored for comedy lovers.

Same good old days
| This sequel is as entertaining as THE GREATEST CIVIL WAR and of course, the main attraction is Leung Sing Po. He is really so funny and I love the way he spoke his Cantonese, the old fashion way. Must have. |

Faulty follow-up

"The Greatest Wedding on Earth" is not a sequel to "The Greatest Civil War on Earth", but it features essentially the same cast in similar roles. In this movie, the actors who played dueling tubby tailors in "Greatest Civil War" now play rival rotund restaurant owners. Unfortunately, "Greatest Wedding" lacks the subtlety of the former film. Comparing "Greatest Civil War" to "Greatest Wedding" is a bit like comparing "His Girl Friday" to the Three Stooges. Sure, "Greatest Wedding" has some funny moments, but it is just not in the same league as "Greatest Civil War." Too often the filmmakers fall back on screaming arguments, silly slapstick, and lame schtick. |

Worthy sequel to "Greatest Civil War"- Watch for P

The two waring families are at it AGAIN, this time the antics had moved from the restaurants to the courtship of the two pair of young lovers both with a counterpart that speaks the other "dialect".As predicted, many mishaps happened and before you know it the two chubby daddies are at each other's throats--but love conquers all--everything comes to a good ending. "The Greatest Wedding on Earth" is a worthy sequel to "The Greatest Civil War", Cathay's wonderful comedy using Cantonese and Mandarin simultaneously to great effect. Like the previous movie, the two chubbies "hogged" (pun intended) the screen but Cheng Ching,the Cantonese boyfriend has a great scene learning Mandarin from Ting Hao, this alone is priceless and makes this disc a "must have" for all Cathay fans. Now, lets have Part 3 !! |
