The Gua Sha Treatment

YesAsia Editorial Description

Screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, Mainland film The Gua Sha Treatment is about the lives of Chinese immigrants in America. Starring award-winning Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Ka Fai, the film looks at Chinese-Western cultural differences from a special angle, and at the same time explores the notions of family and tradition in the context of cultural shock.

Video game designer Datong (Tony Leung) lives in St. Louis with his family. When Datong's father (Zhu Xu) visits from China, he performs a traditional Chinese medicinal treatment, "Gua Sha", on his young grandson. Though painless, the treatment leaves bright red marks on the skin which are interpreted by the kid's teacher as signs of abuse. The family is accused of child abuse, and Datong's son gets transferred to a foster home...

Customer Review of "The Gua Sha Treatment"

It's a good movie, but... Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I think the story about Gua Sha is very good. It shows to us the different cultures between American and Chinese. Also, it indicates the differences how Chinese and American raise their children. With almost 5000 years cultural background, there are a lot of Chinese traditions that others cannot understand.
The one thing I don't like about this movie is the ending... It was kind of stupid... Besides that, everything was good.

Good Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Very good movie. But let me take exception to what the previous reviewer said about "Americans being ignorant about Chinese culture". I seem to remember that there was a big scandal in Hong Kong lately where restaurant owners were decorating their places with NAZI MEMORABILIA because it was "trendy". Talk about IGNORANCE!!

The Gua Sha Treatment Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Beautiful movie. It depicts how ignorant the Americans are about the Chinese culture. It also shows how stubborn human beings are. I would recommend this movie to all kinds of people. It's a must have!
