It seems every great world cinema goes through a rebellious youth phase. Postwar Hollywood had James Dean and Marlon Brando, while Japan produced the "Sun Tribe" pictures at roughly the same time. Hong Kong's own rebels without a cause came of age in the 1960s, and the genre enjoyed a brief resurgence in popularity in the late 1970s and early 80s following the international success of Saturday Night Fever. But the gun-toting young antiheroes of films like The Happenings (1980) and Energetic 21 (1982), with their often violent confrontations with the law, put their American and Japanese counterparts to shame. The Happenings is an uncompromisingly brutal teen romp gone wrong from director Yim Ho (Kitchen).

The movie revolves around one fateful night for a group of disaffected juvenile delinquents. Out joyriding, the gang stages a spur-of-the-moment gas station robbery. What begins as a mere misguided attempt at thrill seeking turns deadly serious when the botched robbery ends with the accidental murder of the station attendant and one of the gang seriously wounded. As the police close in on their hideout, the kids' only hope for escape depends on their ability to function as a team, but high tensions within the gang threaten to be their undoing.

青年忌廉、阿B、阿細、金剛、阿英及小飛俠姐妹倆，帶同「青春期」週刊編輯，往的士高找「舞王」羅倫斯接受訪問。期間，忌廉感到乏味，獨自走出的士高，後偷了一沙灘車在路上奔馳。忌廉驅車回來，著眾人離開，往沙灘暢泳。途中往油站時，才發現各人身無分文，決打劫油站。過程中，金剛被擊至重傷，忌廉則誤殺一名職員。阿B在驚恐下逃去無蹤，餘下五人遂展開逃亡。五人擬往麻將館找大哥阿榮求助，但阿榮在接到電話後卻逃去無蹤，而金剛因失血過多而死。後阿B於街上碰見兩名巡警，終為巡警所捕。警局中又遇上油站被擊傷之職員，揭發了劫案的真相。金剛死後，眾人跑上雜誌社求救，不料被警方包圍。混亂中，阿細被當場擊斃；阿英則墮樓慘死；而忌廉則被槍傷及拘捕。

They are the generation who work hard at living it up at the discos, in midnight car races and occasional fight. They are not happy with the world they live in but are determined to make the most of it. They go racing down the freeway in a stolen car. When stopping at the petroleum station, they find they don't have money. On the spur of the moment, they decide to rob the station. After a fight, King Kong is badly hurt and Cream kills a staff by accident. Bee runs away from the group, badly shaken and frightened by this traumatic experience. He is then caught by the police while King Kong dies of lack of first aid. Then the nightmare comes. A quarrel rises among them; the police arrive at their hide-out; Kid is killed by shooting right between his eyes; Ying slips and falls to her death; Cream is wounded and captured by the police.
