Following the lives of three downtrodden but resilient outcasts, John Lo Mar's gritty social drama paints a sense of realism rarely seen in Hon Kong movies. Li Ching - the best actress of her era - play Ah Chiao is a girl from a rural village stranded in the city, who befriends a kind-hearted transient and a retired actor. They are poor, but they are happy. Although her fortune changes for the better when she becomes a singer, she ultimately learns money can't buy happiness.

Yeh Feng steals the show! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Wide-eyed and acid-tongued country bumpkin Ah Qiao (Li Jing) comes to Hong Kong to build a better life. However, when she discovers that her aunt -- with whom she expected to live -- has moved and left no forwarding address, Ah Qiao has nowhere to stay. She wanders to a public park and winds up on a bench sitting next to dim-witted but companionable Blockhead (Yeh Feng). Blockhead takes the country girl under his wing and into his home and soon they and Blockhead's pal Uncle (Wang Sha) are making a humble living as street musicians.

One day a music impresario hears Ah Qiao singing on the street and he soon persuades the ambitious girl to let him build her a career as a pop star. After undergoing some Eliza Doolittle-like training, Ah Qiao bursts upon the Hong Kong music scene and creates a sensation. Blockhead and Uncle are left behind and Blockhead pines for his former friend. But soon Ah Qiao's mentor makes demands she is unwilling to meet and she has only one person to whom she can turn for help...

While the story of "The Happy Trio" is driven by events in Ah Qiao's life, the movie really belongs to Yeh Feng, who is compelling and believable as the simple-minded, pure-hearted Blockhead. "The Happy Trio" provides a colorful look at Hong Kong's impoverished underside circa 1970. I recommend it highly. (How did Shaw Brothers get away with simply stealing music from "Shaft" and from Emerson, Lake & Palmer for this film's soundtrack?)

Thumbs Up for this one. Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I thought this movie was a spin off from Mr Funny Bone and I would be giving the "skip" button another good work out. To my surprise the Happy Trio is a very good movie. The pace is just right. Li Ching's role is unlike any of her other movies and I did find her very refreshing.

Although the film has some depressing moments but it has a good ending, leaving me feeling good. Another movie on the top shelf.

Decent comedy/drama Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
'The Happy Trio'(1975)is a solid comedy/melodrama from director John Lo Mar. Li Ching is Ah Jiao, a country bumpkin from Mainland China who comes to Hong Kong to search for her aunt. In Hong Kong, she meets simple-minded, yet kind laborer Blockhead(Yeh Feng) and the older, wiser, retired opera actor "Uncle"(Wang Sha). Ah Jiao drifts apart from Blockhead and Uncle when a talent scout turns her into pop star, Diana. Will the three central characters survive...and stay friends in a harsh, unfair world?
'The Happy Trio' does suffer from a dated 1970's look and a number of cliches; did anyone notice the stock music from 'Shaft'(1971)? Also, one of Diana's pop songs has the same rhythm as the theme song for 'Mr. Funny Bone/Lo Fu Ji'(1976).
Still, John Lo Mar succeeds in making us care about Ah Jiao, Blockhead, and Uncle: throughout the film, all three have to look hopelessness and despair in the face! He(Lo Mar) also does a good job of satirizing social ills and the entertainment industry. 'The Happy Trio' isn't as light-hearted as its movie poster artwork may lead one to believe, but it's a solid film.
