YesAsia Editorial Description

Helmed by Chang Cheh, this 1970 Shaw Brothers studio film The Heroic Ones is about the 13th fierce fighting sons of barbarian chieftain Li Ke-yung (Ku Feng) who in the last years of the Tang Dynasty (around 900AD) has been requested by the Chinese Emperor to recapture his capital city which is being ruled over by a rebel leader (the 13th Warriors is the film's Chinese name). Chief among this band of heroes are Li Shih-szu (Ti Lung) and Li Tsun-hsiao (David Keung) the youngest son, the most able and smartest of the bunch as well as his fathers favourite.

The youngest son has to not only deal with a rebel and his large army however, but also be faced with the treacherous action of an ambitious, devious Chinese ambassador (Chan Sing), as well as the bitter jealousy of some of the brothers toward their more favoured siblings which will in the end lead to bloody and tragic consequences...

No screen team was more triumphant in the "Golden Age" of kung-fu cinema than the "iron triangle" of director Chang Cheh and his proteges David Chiang and Ti Lung. This is their quintessential historical epic, set during the waning years of the Tang Dynasty. It's literally brother against brother as Chiang and Lung display their remarkable martial arts prowess -- battling insiders and outsiders in a duel to the death for the fate of China.

This customer review refers to The Heroic Ones
Tragedy, just the way.... Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
Tragedy, just the way Ti Lung & David Keung probably enjoy having their characters. Pretty much a pomp & circumstance type of film for the main characters in this story. A keeper for Ti Lung/David Keung fans, but you may enjoy Blood Brothers more. I consider it a keeper merely for some of the sweet spear moves Ti Lung displays with finess. Once the main characters make their exit, there really isn't anything else worth while to keep the audience interested, other than the less than satisfying but most plausible closure of the movie.

One of the Best Shaw Film Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This is by far one the best Shaw film in relation with the dynamic duo of Ti Lung and David Chiang partnership-my 2 favorite Shaw actors. The only negative thing is Shaw Studio did not create more of this kind of film. This is one of the best Weapon sword play film by Shaw. Ti Lung has incredible screen presence in this film which I keep wonder why Shaw Studio always let him stars only a in a supporting role whenever He and David Chiang appearing together. ( with exception to Dead End ). This movie as with many of Shaw period sword play film will inspire you and make you wish that you can go back in time and be one of the Heroic one. A must have .

Classic 1970 Chang Cheh epic...WONDERFUL SET'S !!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This was very enjoyable, alot better than all the computer generated movies nowadays. Shaw Brothers had wonderful sets, costumes, weapons and alot of extras to make this film so convincing.
David Chiang character was enjoyable, I like his cockyness, and coolness, I did hear his scream in the VCD, but not in the DVD. I liked the scene when David saves Lily Li, and the part when he leaves her house. They always play well together, very convincing. The movie was great until Ti Lung and David died. Then it was kinda boring with the other cast. Ku Feng played the king wonderfully. Great film m,ade in 1971, pick it up if you like classic's and appreciate when movies were made without computer generated mumbo jumbo...

Wonderful Chang Cheh Classic !!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I really enjoyed this classic starring David Chiang and Ti Lung. The movie had a good story line, plot and set. The actors all were wonderful, costumes very detailed. The sad part was when our heroes David Chiang and Ti Lung died. The dead sceen was gory when David Chiang got pulled apart in 5 pieces, lots of blood and guts movie. Great classic !!! Two thumbs up !!!

GREAT MOVIE! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Classic is all I have to say... Action blood and just plain cold bloodedness. Oh, and long too! Over 2 hours -which I love about Shaw Brothers films- you get your moneys worth!

I just finished watching it today and thanks to this full uncut version. I got to finally see the HORSE pull scene. (someone stated that the scream was not present on the dvd - but on my VCD there was definitely a SCREAM from David Chiang). And again... un-expecting to end a film in such a way that it does with it's star actors! :-)

Aaaaah, reliving my days in the ol' Star Cinema in Boston is wonderful! I look foward to all the Shaw Brothers films that come out in the days and years to COME! I wouldn't mind more than 50 a month though! ;-)

One thought.. I heard all Shaw Brothers films were English dubbed - why not release the English dubbed track along with the DVDs? Those odd english accents (I never considered them British sounding)
and dialog in SB films would be great to revisit from time to time. Especially for my lazy-a$$ friends who don't want to appreciate a movie in it's original language and read subtitles. I do have to admit, a Shaw Brothers film can force you to become a speed READER! :-D
