Writer-director Chor Yuen's hit 1972 comedy The House of 72 Tenants is a colorful, innately human film about the Hong Kong common man. Set during a period of depression, the film chronicles the daily lives of a single urban building (the "house") split up into several separate units, and the actual people (the "72 tenants") that dwell within. Given the fluctuating economy, the lives of the people are in constant flux, and as such are given to emotions and situations that flare up without a moment's notice. The acquisition of daily necessities, disputes over personal items, possible evictions, threatened marriages, and lots of screeching and hollering punctuate the lives of these everyday people, who are made distinct and colorful by their vivid personalities, and director Chor Yuen's skill at making them different and real.
