The Imperial Swordsman (VCD) (Hong Kong Version) VCD

The Imperial Swordsman is a 1972 Shaw Brothers period actioner from Taiwanese director Lin Fu Di. Lin first made his name in Taiwanese-dialect films, directing over 60 films that established him as the New Wave representative of Taiwan cinema in the 1950s. In 1964, he switched to the Mandarin film industry, bringing his services to Shaw Brothers and going on to direct some 30 Mandarin films. Having worked in makeup, set design, cinematography, and screenwriting before finding his way to the director's chair, Lin offers deliberately paced, well-rounded films with an earthy tone reminiscent of Taiwanese-dialect films that sets his works apart from those of other Shaw directors.

Lin is now more remembered for his subsequent work as a television director and producer, but he directed quite a few notable films like Lady in the Tower (1967), Black Bull and White Snake (1970), and The Imperial Swordsman. This wuxia opens with a delivery designated for the emperor being intercepted by a band of thieves, leading to revelations of a rebellion conspiracy and plenty of swordfighting action. The film stars Chuan Yuan, better known for The Thunderbolt Fist which was released the same year, and Shaw Brothers starlet Shu Pei Pei from Wrath of the Sword (1970) and Village of Tigers (1974).

This prime example of the satisfying, crowd-pleasing martial arts action adventure was both written and directed by Lin Fu-ti, with an eye toward keeping the customer satisfied. Chuan Yuan is the noble, powerful hero and Shu Pei-pei, one of Shaw’s top swordswoman, is a reluctant bride who comes upon a rebellion plot. They are joined by a large cast of expert fighters and actors – all keeping the intrigue and adventure foremost in the film. There’s even a nice surprise ending amidst all the action.
