YesAsia Editorial Description
The eerily beautiful photography and melodic musical score of THE ISLE stand in odd contrast to the brutal horror story it tells. On the serene surface of a secluded bay float a series of candy-colored fishing houses, rented to men who seek an escape. The owner and operator of the village is a mute woman with a row boat who delivers her guests to their floating rooms, and sells them bait, food, coffee, prostitutes, and occasionally her own body. The men mistreat her, and her wounded spirit haunts the lake. At first subtle and secretive, but increasingly more bold and direct, the mute woman enacts unexpected violence upon the men. For example, when one client is leaning out over the dock to defecate into the lake, she swims up behind him, pulls him under the water, and stabs him. The blurred, partially submerged camerawork suggests that the woman is disembodied while committing these acts, as if unrealized hatred is surfacing within her to inspire her actions. Real trouble arrives in the form of a man who is hiding out from the law. He rents the yellow fishing house closest to shore and contemplates suicide. A sadomasochistic chemistry develops between this unhappy man and the mute woman and their relationship facilitates a series of extremely violent sex and mutilation scenes which ultimately bring THE ISLE to its disturbing conclusion.
"...On the social plain, the movie is a surreal evocation of the Darwinian struggle for dominance within South Korea's lower class..." - Stephen, Holden (New York Times Critic), New York Times, 08/23/2002
"The film shimmers on the surface -- it's as visually pleasing as SPRING, SUMMER..."
- David, Cox (Uncut Critic), Uncut, 10/01/2004

this movie is not very good
wow i'm surprised at yesasia for not letting me comment as a 1.. so i have to put a 10 for this movie... but it is only a 1. I can't post up a 1 rating... Anyways this movie sucks soooo bad!! i wish buying this movie. This movie makes me want to throw up. It is just plain old nasty... The story is pretty basic. The girl is a prostitute.. who takes revenge on the people that hired her and doesn't give her enough money.. What the hell?? if you're a hooker, you're prone to get treated like that... Later on, she met this cop and they had sex together a few times... He has problems.. later on he kills her... anyways the movie is fill with nasty fish plus hook scenes.. .DON'T BUY this movie. it is nasty...

I did not understand this movie!!
What was this movie about, anyway? I kept watching, hoping to understand, and I was left going "Huh?" I don't know if something was lost in translation or what. The characters names were never mentioned, you never find out who they are, why they are doing the things they do, or anything! The ending was beyond bizarre. I do think it was well acted and well made, but it's hard to like a movie you just can't understand.

If you can stomach it
Most people are replused when they watch this movie. There are some rather.. graphic scenes. For example the man attempts to swallow a bunch of fish hooks that are tied to the pole... Throughout the movie there's a strange, unspoken relationship between the man and the woman. There's definately a deeper meaning to the movie. So if you feel like thinking about the deeper meaning of their relationship and you can stomach watching it.. then I would recommend this movie for you.

no stupid jokes!, the way i like it
I saw this movie and I loved it. This film is unlike any other I have seen. Right after I saw it I was unsure about the plot. But, now looking back it is more clear. Some label this movie as a horror film, which is really disgusting to me. Just because it doesn't have a stupid joke or cliche in it, doesn't mean it can't be a romance. I am glad I saw it. Finally a movie that has a more intellectual and artsy feeling to it rather than some bubblegum cliche crap that comes to our box offices every summer. In the future I hope to see more films like this. Sorry to make this so long!!
