Professional Review of "THE KILLER (Japan Version)"

The Blade ten years earlier, this Tsui Hark-produced, John Woo-directed motion picture is a Jackson Pollock action painting where plot and character are boiled down to essential elements and mainlined straight to the heart. A 9mm weepie, if you will. Like the cocking of the hammer before the bullet in the head this picture starts in the relative calm of a church where hitman, Chow Yun-fat, and his manager, Stanley, are setting up a hit. A devout Christian, Woo is dead serious about all those crucifixes and doves flying about, a fact that's hard to remember now that they've become such ironic emblems. But in The Killer, Woo's iconography is still fresh, and if you're willing to suspend your sense of irony it's possible to believe in them almost as strongly as he does. Occasionally accused of making movies that are little more than bullet pornography, Woo's critics miss the point. The hallmark of pornography is insincerity, and if Woo is anything it's sincere. To him every turn and twist, every character's decision, every bullet that's fired, every henchman that's killed is an agonizing ritual as his characters are immersed in the crucibles of his films to have their sins burned away, their bodies purified in gun smoke and muzzle flashes. He's the hairshirt-wearing John the Baptist, suffering his way towards salvation. And The Killer is his bible. Chow Yun-fat and Danny Lee, hitman and policeman respectively, are given their crosses to bear in the opening scenes: Chow's is a nightclub singer blinded by him in a hit (Sally Yeh) and Lee's is the lost trust of his superiors after he kills a bystander during a tram shoot-out. Hardboiled Lee is thrown onto Chow's trail after a botched hit during which Chow earns the enmity of both Lee and the criminal who hired him and now wants him dead. The most visual of film makers, Woo uses a battery of "only in the movies" techniques to show the intertwining of Lee and Chow's fates until the two face off, muzzle to muzzle, in a now-classic scene in blind Sally Yeh's apartment. Chow wants Lee off his back, Lee respects Chow but his attitude is once a thief always a thief. The confrontation ends, but as the two men learn that everyone in their respective worlds are against them, they slowly turn to each other for the kind of high-calibre support fellas like them need in a sinful world. Chow Yun-fat's broad, expressive face is the perfect canvas for the kind of exquisite suffering Woo likes to see in his leading men, and for once Danny Lee comes off like a human being and not a crypto-fascist. Everything from the score, to the cinematography, to the legendary action scenes are pitch perfect. Like an illuminated manuscript, The Killer glows. by Grady Hendrix |

The Killer is probably one of my best Hong Kong action film(well at least best John Woo film). When I first saw it I was not just glued to the emotional storyline I was also completley amazed by how all the action scenes were done and Woo certently does shows his unique cinematic style and flair in this film. The movie may be old but it is still great to watch on dvd with DTS audio (thank God for that). I am also trying to get the extended cut version. |

Heroic Bloodshed Masterpiece!
|
Best known to the west as the film that made Chow Yun Fat and John Woo International Stars, the Killer was underrated by Asian Audiences (in the same way A Better Tomorrow was underrated by the West) and quite frankly, this is a shame for such a great movie. It seems like such an obvious idea today, but The idea of an Assassin with a Conscience was quite revolutionary for 1989 HK Cinema, and Chow Yun Fat plays Jeff to perfection, a Killer for Hire with a Heart, who when hired to kill a local Triad boss at a Nightclub, accidentally blinds Singer Jenny (Sally Yeh) with a Gunshot. Grief-stricken, Jeff tries his best to help the poor girl recover, while at odds with his Mentor and former assassin for Hire, Sidney (Paul Chu-Kong) as well as a Dedicated Police Officer (Danny Lee) and his partner (Kenneth Tsang). During the assassination of a corrupt Businessman at a Dragon Boat Race, Jeff finds himself Chased not only by the Police and Dedicated Cop Lee, but also his fellow triads, who have lost confidence in Jeff since the last killing. During the crossfire that ensures, a Little Girl is injured, and Being the Nice Person he is at heart, Jeff rushes her to a nearby Hospital, despite the dangers of being Killed or caught by the Police. Lee Pursues, and they soon find themselves in a standoff at the hospital. Lee's opinion of Jeff is changed a little after seeing how he risked his life for that little girl, and even though Jeff escapes and Lee is still Bent on Arresting him, this leads to a sort of admiration between the two, which builds up into an unlikely friendship between the two by the film's end, one reminiscent of City on Fire. This film is not just another Heroic Bloodshed film, and John Woo goes to great lengths to show this, with the help of First Class Cinematography by Peter Pao, as well as some great sets, including the thrilling Gun battle finale, which takes place in a Church of all places. While it could be simply enjoyed as a Thrilling Action Piece, the real joy of this movie is experienced in looking deeper into the story and the characters, which in some ways is like exploring the Philosophy of the Director Himself. The Killer is a True Classic, a Film to be watched again and again, and only Fortune Star could have done this film Justice with this DVD Release. If you Can't Get A Better Tomorrow, this is definitely the one to get while you still can! |

A classic.

This was the film to get me into Chinese cinema, and more specifically the amazing Chow Yun Fat. A brilliant, unique, touching storyline melds with some of the most intense action scenes and gunfights I've ever seen. The characters are well developed yet mysterious and the quotes are inspiring. This is a top class film, one of my favourites, and a perfect example of Chow Yun Fat's acting ability. A flowing masterpiece that builds up to a climatic ending, I cannot recommend this film more. |

#1 action
|
this movie is old but i love it so much, my favorite Chow Yun Fat film, next to Crouching Tiger! it is about an assain that falls in love with an innocent bystander that he injured and she went blind. a cop tracks him down and they become buddies. but then the people who hire the assain refused to pay and the assain's friend risked helping him... a very sad and tragic movie. but you can not miss the action. the shooting scenes are beautifully put together! it has some of Sally's songs in there too, very good movie! |
