The Kingdom And The Beauty

YesAsia Editorial Description

Adopted from Chinese folklore "The Wandering Dragon Seduces the Phoenix," Li Hanxiang's classic movie "The Kingdom and the beauty" is one of the most successful productions in Hong Kong at the early 60's. Starring Lin Dai and Zhao Lei.

Emperor Zhengde of Ming Dynasty was notorious for his hedonism and irresponsibility. He decided to disguise himself as a civilian and travelled to the south of Yangtze. Meanwhile, imperial guard Zhou Yong was preparing to visit his hometown in the south of Yangtze and volunteered to escort Zhengde.

When they arrived in the town of Meilong, Zhengde was attracted to a young girl who played the role of the celestial lady in a local festival. As his steps brought Zhengde to the "Dragon and Phoenix Inn," he learned that the young girl Li Feng was the sister of the innkeeper. Zhengde asked for her name and caught her attention, and Li was excited to meet this young and handsome stranger. Then Zhengde expressed his passion for her and Li finally fell into his arms.

The next morning a senior official Liang Chu led troops to besiege the inn and pleaded Zhengde to leave for the capital. Only until then did Li recognise that her lover was the Emperor. Zhengde gave her a jade ornament and pledged that he would send an order to marry her when he arrived in Beijing.

Upon his return Zhengde was silenced by his mother's sternness. Soon Li was out of his mind. A year later Li gave birth to a son, which made her the subject of gossip among the town dwellers. She soon fell sick of depression. Three years had passed and still Li could hear nothing from the capital.

The inn waiter Daniu was sympathetic with Li and begged his way to the capital, where he spread the story of Li and the emperor by singing. Finally Daniu managed to catch the attention of the emperor. Zhengde then sent an envoy to Meilong to receive Li. Li asked her sister-in-law to take care of the child and set off for the capital. Before arrival Li stopped to pray in an old temple in the countryside, where she finally collapsed and died quietly. As the envoy arrived at the palace, Zhengde was shocked with grief and regret to find that Li was already dead...

Product Information

Li Han-hsiang, the acknowledged master of adapting great huangmeei opera tales to film, surpasses himself with this tale of a Chinese emperor's love for a country maiden. So beautifully filmed and sensitively told, it won the best picture award at the prestigious Asian Film Festival, and was a huge box office success. Once seen, its lush color cinematography, memorable score, and the haunting beauty of its superstar, Linda Lin Dai, is rarely forgotten.

Kingdom rules Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I wasn't born yet to experience any of Lin Dai's films nor I was I admirer of Mandarin musicals. I decided to take a risk on this film and find out what the big deal about Lin Dai was. She has such incredible screen presence that no other HK actress ever had. She's in top form under the expert direction of Li Han Hsiang. The colors are beautifully restored to technicolorish levels. However the films claims to be a Shaw Scope at end film and the trailor reveals a film that was perhaps 1.85:1 aspect ratio. But the full screen transfer does not indicate it was a scope film. The film also features a super young King Hu and mega young David Chiang. I look foward to more of Lin Dai's films.

The Master Piece of Art Work Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The movie itself is a very good piece directed by Li Han Hseng and Lindai's performance is excellent.

The significant thing about this movie is the super teriffic job of remastering the piece by techincians of Celestial Picture. The quality of the picture and sound are unbeatable for the old movies 40 years ago.

Very nice job done and we are looking forward to the upcoming movies with the sane quality of remastering.

WELCOME BACK TO THE SCREEN , LIN DAI Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
What a joy to see Lin Dai back on the screen again, for all of those movie fans who grew up in the 60s,
Lin Dai was certainly one of the Brightest and most
talented actress the Hongkong screen has to offer, it
was utterly criminal of Shaw's Studios to keep her movies out of reach to the general public through the
various new home entertainment formats such as videotapes and laserdiscs, I hope now moviefans of the
world can see all of the great works of the past and
not only be inundated with the current trashy product
that flooded the market. "The Kingdom and the Beauty"
was a good example of how a simple romantic story can
be told in such a wonderful way through folk music and
acted by a brilliant cast. Hopefully the future releases from the "vault" will include more films from the 50s and 60s.
