The Legend Of Suriyothai (DTS Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Directed by a Thai prince and financed by the royal family, The Legend of Suriyothai unfolds an epic tale of the Kingdom of Ayothaya which as never been told so picturesquely before. The film, directed by Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol who used to be a film student, was first released in Thailand in summer 2001 and soon became one of the country's biggest box-office hits. Thanks to the prince's friend Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, the film was shortened from 185 minutes to a more manageable 143 minutes for general audience.

The grandiose battle scenes of The Legend of Suriyothai resemble those of Hollywood's biblical extravaganzas of the 1950s, except that elephants instead of horse chariots are running across the battlefield. No one who has seen the film can forget the amazing scenario of over 50 elephants marching! You will also find the lavish palace, glamorous costumes, and even the spectacular violence just as astounding. The production of this film takes more than 5 years with more than $5.8 million invested, making it the most expensive film in Thailand so far.

The Legend of Suriyothai is set in the 16th century. Young Suriyothai (M.L. Piyapas Bhirombhhakdi) is forced leave behind her true love to marry Prince Tien (Sarunyoo Wongkrachang) and she remains faithful to him since then. Facing Burmese invasion, Suriyothai rallies the Thai forces and leads a brave and determined campaign against the Burmese troops to save not only her husband but also her country. The Legend of Suriyothai shows you the life of this national heroine in a relaxed pace yet you will never find this historical film boring.

Professional Review of "The Legend Of Suriyothai (DTS Version)"

March 3, 2006

Well after seeing this film there is only one thing I can possibly say, and that is SHOW ME THE MONEY! I have yet to see a film come from Thailand or Southeast Asia that is so lush, and it's none of this CGI stuff - this is sheer set and costume extravagance. The film reportedly cost anywhere between 8 - 20 million dollars US. But I guess when you have the royal Thai family backing the film, anything is possible.

The Legend of Suriyothai begs to be seen for two reasons. Firstly, the look of the film is stunning; it seems as if each detail in the costumes and each piece of furniture had a once over in gold. Moreover, the locations that were used in the film are as beautiful as they come. I have even heard that the locations used in the film were the locations where the real battles against Burma took place.

Secondly, this film needs to be seen for its battles. They are of grand proportions and are as bloodletting as I have seen in a long while. The warriors in The Legend of Suriyothai make Uma Thurman in Kill Bill look like a kitten. I would imagine that Prince Chatri Chalerm Yukol received a headache coordinating such battle sequences. There is even a scene where several elephants are lined up with cannons mounted on their backs.

However grandiose the film may be, it is still not void of troubles. The film tries to tell too much. The narrative is heavily burdened with many attempts to overthrow the crown, civil strife, battles with Burma, and the hardships that Queen Suriyothai must endure. With so much going on in the narrative, the film often becomes un-involving because one needs a rather large amount of information about Thai history to keep track of what's happening.

Overall, The Legend of Suriyothai is worth the time and attention needed to watch it, and for all the attention needed, there are the massive pay-offs - the stunning look of the film and the wild battles. This is one of the many great films emerging from Thailand at the moment and I urge you not to miss it.

It's good! Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
This movie is suppose to be the best thai movie ever made. It cost soo much money and all the actor/actress are top rank.

My sister return from thailand with this movie, that i had to see. It's pretty good all the sences and everything, but it's pretty confusing considering the fact that.. you get lost who married to who later on because of all the girls the king had.

OVERALL, the movie was really good.
