Professional Review of "The Legend Of The Flying Swordman (DVD) (US Version)"

August 20, 2003

This professional review refers to The Legend of The Flying Swordsman
Never has a movie been so fraught. Ominous music, grimly canted camera angles, and a main character, Fun Li, with the mope-topped haircut of the gloomiest of goth rockers. Wong Jing acolyte, Bosco Lam, filmed this odd drama about alcoholism and infanticide in snowiest Korea, and the ice-encrusted landscapes match the chill in its heart. It's not a swordplay flick, but a Lifetime movie for the sword-slinging set.

Fun Li is a sloppy wastrel, a drunk who spends most of his wedding day gazing at the bottom of an upturned jug. His wife, Cher (Gigi Lai, looking psychotic) isn't happy about this, and neither is his dad, a magisterial Sonny Chiba (billed here as "Mr. Chiba"). Marriage, as usual, doesn't turn out to be the magic cure for alcoholism, and Fun spends his days and nights in Ancient Chinese Nightclub, flicking chopsticks at a saucy dancing girl who can apparently cook wine in her cleavage. He won't come home, he won't sober up, he won't even respect his dad. And you don't disrespect Mr. Chiba.

Dad shows up and, as per the tenets of tough love, and drags Fun home by his hair. Hair pulling seems to work, and Fun vows to change and he takes on a job for the family security company. Everyone is thrilled to no end, except terminally unhappy Cher. Inconsolable, she takes a horseback ride and meets Kim Mo-Hon, a spiky-haired Korean who plays a big drum. Their exchange is wordless. Romantic. Intimate. Then he punches her horse in the head and blood mists her face. Just like in the movies.

Things go awry on Fun's security job and he winds up an amnesiac idiot, nursed back to health by a nice young lady living in a hut in the woods. This turns out to be merely a happy interlude, as the movie turns darker and more ominous, until it fades to pitch black and plays like the tormented prequel to a lone swordsman. Bosco Lam is ambitious, and The Legend of the Flying Swordsman comes across like The Blade only without the style or the swordfights. There's one fight near the end, enhanced with Dragonball Z effects, and that's it. The rest is mood and feeling.

A tormented drama starring Dave Wang (his first in eight years) this one was made on the cheap, but its dark, drunk, icy cold mood sticks with you. It's all about parents murdering their children, either literally or psychologically, but not to worry. The parents get murdered, too.

This movie is more than okej! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
When I ordered this movie, I mainly want to see an other face of Dave Wang, since he was so handsome in my childhood memories. I had simply no expectations at all. The movie is very okej, the language is beautiful and music is fantastic! Just what I needed to watch a Friday evening with some potato chips and a Coke. I like it!

Not a worthy swordplay movie Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
When I finished watching this film I had 2 thoughts that entered my mind; 1) What the heck was that? & 2) Why the heck did I keep watching? You basically hate the main character because he's such a loser & nothing impressive about him at all. I thought a tragedy was something that makes you feel sorry for the main character, where this story made you feel more like he deserved it. Perhaps it's the title that's wrong; you cheer on the Korean fighter & the wife. Camera work wasn't fight choreography friendly. So there was no worthy aspect of this movie in my book.

I totally thought this would be a great movie, and the cover and everything looked top quality, but it was a big fat flop!

There is no mention of even a flying swordsman in the whole thing. Andt there is only one basic fight scene! Dont make the mistake I did and waste your money on this dvd.

Still looking for something good... Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
I try to be open minded about movies and give them every opportunity to be entertaining. Unfortunately my opportunity was painful and a complete waste of time. This movie appears to be a "remake" of a very old and traditional Chinese legend. Too bad the director and producer had never heard of it before filming even began. The actors must have been desperately poor as I can see no other reason they agreed to be in this mess of a film. And what a mess it is indeed! It took immense will power for me to continue watching to the end, but I made it through and was still confused. It seems they have some scenes in the wrong order, which makes it even worse. The director and producer apparently thought they had a better idea than to use the legend and just rather made up the scenes driving to the set. The result was very confusing and most difficult to watch! The only talent to be found is Chiba and even he appears desperate and looking for a way out. It's impossible to write the legend mentioned in it's true form in such a small space. But it doesn't really matter as this wretch of a movie should never be mistaken for something you might want to watch.

Bad and confusing plot Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
When I rented this movie, I thought there was going to be lots of swordplay and action, but it turn out to be pointless watching it. The plot was extremely confusing and hard to catch on to. I would not recommend this movie to anyone, as it is pointless and a waste of time.
