YesAsia Editorial Description
Based on a work by renowned Naoki prize-winning author Higashino Keigo, Tegami, a.k.a Letter, is a tale of brotherhood and reconciliation, presenting the aftermath of violent crime from a perspective rarely covered in film - the perpetrator's family. Perhaps best known for his leading performance in the film Train Man, Yamada Takayuki, who also appeared in the drama adaptation of Higashino's Byakuyako, takes on a completely different kind of role in Tegami. Yamada stars as a troubled young man who faces scorn and ostracism because of the crimes of his older brother, sensitively portrayed by Tamayama Tetsuji (Heaven's Bookstore). Rising actress Sawajiri Erika (1 Litre no Namida), continuing her effortless conquest of Japanese entertainment, plays Yamada's love. Jiro Shono, director of such popular TV dramas as Beautiful Life, helms his first feature film in 16 years, and Tegami reflects that restrained yet sentimental quality familiar to Japanese dramas, with a second half that may elicit more than a few drops of tears.
Twenty-year-old Naoki (Yamada Takayuki) lives in the shadow of his brother (Tamayama Tetsuji), who is serving a prison sentence for murder. With his brother imprisoned, Naoki continues to work hard to support himself, but the life he knows has abandoned him. Carrying the cross of being a "murderer's brother", Naoki is constantly discriminated against at work and by his neighbors. Shutting himself away from other people, Naoki slowly begins to resent his brother, and stops returning his letters. But his brother continues to write to him, adding to Naoki's anger. During these difficult times, the only light that shines for him is Yumiko (Sawajiri Erika), who helps him remember the dreams he has given up.

After the endless assembly line of "pure love" films in the past year, The Letter (a.k.a. Tegami) comes as a welcome soft alternative. It looks and feels like a "pure love" film, but with a more human and compelling core about family and reconciliation.
Yamada Takayuki stars as Naoki, a young man whose life drastically changes after his brother (Tamayama Tetsuji) is convicted for murder. From that day on, he is often discriminated against because of his brother's crime, forced to constantly move apartments and change jobs. To not attract attention, he keeps to himself while working on his dream to become a stand-up comedian. Just as success is within grasp, he loses everything and retreats back unto himself. During this entire time, he and his imprisoned brother have been writing letters to each other. The letters are the sole light in his brother's life, but they are increasingly a burden to Naoki. To move on with his life, Naoki decides to stop writing to his brother. Naoki is a difficult character to warm up to because of his introverted personality and standoffish manner, and Yamada Takayuki does a good job of making him believable, if not always likable. One of the details that lifts the story is Naoki's dream of becoming a comedian, despite his otherwise humorless nature. This sets up an interesting contrast, his ability to do on stage what he can't do in life - laugh things off. Yamada ably captures the two sides of Naoki's personae without drifting out of character. Tamayama Tetsuji meanwhile does wonders with his limited screen time, earning plenty of sympathy points for a character that started out as a killer. Perhaps even more important than connecting with Yamada's protagonist, it is the feeling of empathy for Tamayama's character that makes the brothers' relationship and the film affecting. The Letter is undeniably heavy-handed in story, but balances out with a restrained tone and sensitive, straightforward exposition. The level of discrimination Naoki encounters in the film is questionable, exaggerated for the sake of melodrama, but there is something frank and genuine about the way the film is punctuated by matter-of-fact moments of both kindness and unfairness. Both negative and sympathetic actions are met with the same retreating reaction from Naoki, highlighting that The Letter is less about Naoki's struggle against society than a struggle against himself. The film is quiet and subdued, but covers a whole range of events and emotions over a long period of healing, such that when the big moment comes in the end, the tears feel earned and the journey feels justified. |

I am a HUGE Tamayama Tetsuji fan, so as soon as I saw him on the cover of this movie, I HAD to watch it. No questions asked. I read several positive reviews on this title, so I expected good things. To my disappointment, it was much like Crying Out Love (Sekai no Chuusin...). The action was SO slow that the potential emotional qualities were washed away. In fact, the pace was so slow, I stopped watching the middle bit and fast forwarded to the ending. I found the story to be a good one. Sad story about family, making peace, desperado, and redemption (as mentioned in the review before me). The ending was really the best part though. I found Takayuki's acting to be sterile, monotone, and unconvincing. His "comedy acts" were pitiful, and I didn't find him CONVINCING AT ALL as his character. Tamayama (despite my biases) stole the spotlight whenever he appeared on screen. You could see his guilt, his regret, his loss in his eyes--he was what made the film emotional to watch. Overall, great story, but poorly executed possibly because of poor casting and a very slow pace. |

A very spellbinding film about the impact of criminal behavior that goes beyond the act of crime. This film depicts the price of stigma of having a family member of an inmate in prison for murder. This film does not preach the right or wrong of the crime and instead ask "Is it all right to discriminate or stigmatize a family or members of a family, who are associated by no choice of their own with a criminal". Do we need to punish the convict and his/her family? Although set in Japan, this story has some universal theme of social stigma, redemption, family, and finding your own identity. Society is very unkind, yet there are brief moments of inspiration and kindness that makes these individuals go on. Takayuki Yamada does great job in his role as Naoki. Erika Sawajiri is really a talented actress, although her rating has gone down considerably. Highly recommended film. For contrast, It should be watched together with Korea's "Maundy Thursday". |
