Sit in China, in the middle of the cultural Revolution in the early 1970s, in a small village where the intellectuals are "re-educated" by the peasants, the film focuses on three people. Ma is a violinist. Her friend Luo has renamed one of Mozart's sonatas as Mozart thinks about Chairman Mao in order to please the village head. The two accomplices meet a little seamstress with whom they hatch an amorous and literary plot, through the medium of literary classics by Flaubert, Dumas, Tolstoy and Balzac that they read in secret.

Read the book; see the movie! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"The Little Chinese Seamstress" is nearly as good as the exquisite Dai Sijie novel upon which it is based. Beautifully shot and smoothly paced, with superb performances by the entire cast, the film does a superb job of evoking the gentle and intimate feel of the novel.

I must admit that I was surprised by the casting of Zhou Xun as the Little Seamstress. As I read the novel, I envisioned a more delicate flower than Miss Zhou, but upon reflection I suspect that the earthier Miss Zhou is a more realistic choice than the character I had imagined.

I wholeheartedly, unreservedly recommend this film!

An Important and Excellent Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one of the rare movies that it's as satisfying
as the book which the movie was based on and of which the author has received numerous prestigous awards.
The co-production of French and Chinese is excellent
in its luscious scenery, wonderful music and gentle,
realistic story telling. A small slice of recent chinese history powerfully depicted the human condition and the will to survie as well as the importance of education, books, arts and music which
encourage the intellectual mind whether it concerns
an individual or an entire country. It was done with
good taste (I am not surprised with the participation
of the Frensh film makers).
The ensample acting was great. Particularly the three
main, young actors, Liu Ye, Chen Kun and Zhou Xun, all were absolutely marvelous. The story was moving, romantic, funny, sad and most of all, poignant. If you are of Chinese descendent, you should not miss this movie or read the book (or both).
If you are a movie buff, I highly recommend this movie.
The only negative thing is when I bought the movie,
it was very, very dark. Some of the scenes I missed
as a result. Seeing it in the theater in California,
it was fine, no problems at all. Also, the English
subtitle is well done.

Love, Freedom and Thought Police Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The Little Chinese Seamstress is a visually beautiful and intellectually eye-opening cross-cultural autobiographical reflection by a Chinese man. He and his friend were sent to Phoenix Mountain, in rual Western China to be re-educated. They both fall in love with the daughter of a tailor, whom they woo with forbidden translations of Western novels, including especially Balzac. The movie includes scenes from the author/director's experience after the 1970s re-education experience that cap the story and place it into perspective. Chinese Communism at its most inflexibly bureaucratic contrasts with Western and classic Chinese ideas in this warmly told story of three young people caught up in ageless emotions and the sepcific historical wrinkle of the Cultural Revolution. Beautifully photographed, superbly paced, it's a feast for the eyes, the mind and the emotions. Pick it up. Experience it.

An outstanding film.. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a wonderful peice of film-making.
The story starts at a re-education camp in a remote mountain village..
The core of the tale centres around the two boys attempts to introduce reading and literature to the daughter of the local tailor, to whom they are both attracted.
She accepts this wholeheartedly, and the books/stories start to change the lives of her and the villagers in many ways.
The boys return to the village years later, as adults....can't tell you why, you'll just have to watch the film. Good ending.

A real treat - recommended.
