YesAsia Editorial Description
From Spring Subway to Curiosity Kills the Cat, Sixth Generation director Zhang Yibai has shown a knack for capturing the state of modern relationships in the constant bustle of present-day China. Unlike some of his peers, Zhang points a realistic, but also audience-friendly lens towards his characters and urban landscape, aesthetically depicting small lives in the big city. He previously explored cross-cultural relationships in his Shanghai segment of the pan-Asian omnibus About Love, and The Longest Night in Shanghai returns to the theme, portraying an unlikely romantic encounter in the glittering metropolis. The film brings together top Mainland actress Vicki Zhao (Shaolin Soccer) and award-winning Japanese actor Motoki Masahiro (Shall We Dance?) for this Roman Holiday-like romantic comedy of errors. Along for the ride is a very star-studded international cast including Nishida Naomi (Train Man), Dylan Kuo (The Outsiders), Sam Lee (Made in Hong Kong), Naoto Takenaka, and Tsukamoto Takashi (A Song to the Sun), who starred in Zhang's About Love segment.
Japanese makeup artist Mizushima Naoki (Motoki Masahiro) is in Shanghai on a job. Wandering by himself at night, he takes a knocking from reckless taxi driver Lin Xi (Vicki Zhao), but is luckily unharmed. After some language confusion, Naoki gets into the taxi, mistaking Lin Xi's insistent friendliness as an invitation for a free tour of Shanghai. Little does he know, Lin Xi is planning on taking this well-heeled foreigner on a very roundabout tour of Shanghai, with the meter running. As Naoki's worried colleagues set off in search for him, Lin Xi and Naoki slowly develop a bond that transcends their language gap.

Product Information
Director: Zhang Yi Bai
China, Shanghai. A Japanese top make-up artist and hairstylist Naoki Mizushima (Masahiro Motoki) suddenly knocked over by a bashed-up taxi, recklessly driven by a female-driver Linshi (Vicki Zhao). Mizushima is surprisingly safe. He accepts her passionate proposal and gets into her cab. Not understanding a word of Chinese, he thinks she is being kind and offering him a free guided tour of Shanghai. In fact, Linshi is thinking that "All foreigners are suckers", and that she can make a fast buck from her unexpected fare. So begins their "misguided" tour of Shanghai... Meanwhile, Mizushima's colleagues are in a turmoil by his sudden disappearance. His manager and long time partner Miho (Naomi Nishida) and slightly doubious advertising agent Yamaoka (Naoto Takenaka), plus the interpreter Shoshin (Sam Lee) all set off into nighttime Shanghai in search of him.

Nice work by Vicki

Renowned make up artist Mizushima Naoki (Motoki Masahiro) travels to Shanghai with his entourage to work at a televised award show. Unbeknownst to his crew, Mizushima feels enervated by his all-consuming career and dying love affair with his business manager. After the show, he wanders alone and disconsolate onto the streets of Shanghai, only to be clobbered by a taxi. The taxi's driver Lin Xi (Vicki Zhao) had been distracted at learning that the mechanic she loves (Dylan Kuo) is going to marry another woman. After determining that Mizushima is unhurt, Lin gives him a tour of the city and thus begins a journey of self-discovery for both driver and passenger. If the film had maintained its focus on the growing relationship between Mizushima and Lin, then I believe that this might have been a remarkable film. Instead, every time the film begins to generate human interest, it cuts away to the unfunny antics and tedious philosophizing of the movie's minor characters. I can recommend the film for the fine performances by Zhao and Motoki, but be prepared to be frustrated by the time wasted on ill-conceived supporting characters. |
