Escaping from assassination, the number-one-scholar Hon Man-tin hides at Chow Kwai-lan's room and falls in love with the lady at first sight. Meanwhile, Lo, the brother of the Queen, comes to propose a marriage with Chow. Hon pretends he is the fiance of Chow. The young couple thus makes engagement with each other.
However, when Hon goes home, his father forces him to marry the princess, or the whole family will be sentenced to death. Lo asks Hon to propose a marriage with Chow on his behalf. Chow is angry at Hon's attitude and pretends to be in love with Lo, so as to make Hon jealous. At Hon's wedding, both Hon and Chow are sad. Hon makes the princess drunk and leaves to look for Chow. An assassin sneaks inside and wounds the princess. The assassin turns out to be General Kong. Kong has attempted to kill Hon before when he learned that Hon was arranged to marry the princess, who he loves dearly. The princess dies and Kong is sentenced. The emperor is touched by Hon's love to Chow and approves their marriage.
