YesAsia Editorial Description
Shaw Brothers auteur Li Han Hsiang helms the period comedy The Mad Monk. Departing from the luscious aesthetics and sensually charged stories he is most well known for, Li offers an earnest and entertaining take on the episodic adventures of Ji Gong, an eccentric vagabond monk who spurned Buddhist rules of asceticism but was considered a "living buddha" because of his benevolence. Portrayed numerous times on both the small and big screen, Ji Gong was perhaps most notably embodied by Stephen Chow in his 1993 film The Mad Monk, although a same-titled offering came much earlier in 1977.
Li's The Mad Monk consists of four stories that see the roaming monk save a mother and daughter from the brink of death and a young man from the hands of unscrupulous debtors. Ji Gong also deals mischievous justice on robbers and corrupt officials. The titular mad monk is played with flair by renowned 70s actor Yeh Feng, who also sings the film's theme song. Co-starring Siu Yam Yam and Yu Rong, The Mad Monk was followed up in 1978 with the sequel The Mad Monk Strikes Again.

No genre is beyond prolific auteur Li Han-hsiang, who slips from directing action to dramas to erotica with seeming ease but to great success. Li turns The Mad Monk into a hilarious scamper around the villages as the Mad Monk rushes around saving hawkers from crumbling walls and bullies, recovering stolen money for a young man and punishing a ruthless court official and his son. A fun caper with an underlying moral.

Ji Gong to the rescue!
|
In "The Mad Monk", Yeh Feng surely plays one of the most unusual leading men ever to grace the silver screen. Short, pudgy, drunk, unwashed, and ugly, the monk Ji Gong doesn't make a good first impression on anyone he meets. Indeed, most people assume he is crazy. However, if you are suffering an injustice, then Ji Gong is the man you want on your side ... even if, due to his terrible body odor, you prefer he keep his distance. Ji Gong doesn't defeat the evildoers with fisticuffs or swordplay. He outwits them, usually by playing upon their greed and lust. It becomes a real treat to see Ji Gong verbally joust with people who seek to use their power and wealth to take advantage of the downtrodden. Yeh Feng is terrific as the scruffy monk who thinks nothing of pawning the saffron robes of his fellow monks in order to buy a drink for himself. The cast is filled with a host of superb Shaw Brothers' character actors. While this is not the lush production that one typically associates with director Li Han Hsiang, it effectively brings to life the daily affairs of average folks in its historical setting. I recommend "The Mad Monk" highly; battles of wits were never more fun. |
