The Marriage Certificate VCD

At once funny and undeniably real, director Huang Jianxin's The Marriage Certificate is a satirical portrait on the covenant of marriage in contemporary Chinese life. Young Xiaowen (Li Xiao Meng) narrates the story of her parents' maritaltroubles, which stem from a minor incident and eventually grows to far more. Mother Xie Yuting (Lui Lai Ping) is an engineer, while father Gu Ming (Feng Kung) is a psychiatrist. When Yu Ting's factory announces the giveaway of a blanket to all employees married for eighteen or more years, Yu Ting is happy to hear of it. But the giveaway requires a marriage certificate as proof, and Yuting can't find hers. When efforts to reclaim the certificate prove elusive, a wedge is driven between the parents, until ultimately only Xiaowen can attempt to save her parents' marriage. Huang Jianxin uses a seemingly small and unconnected series of incidents to reveal greater insecurities and fears present in every marriage. The Marriage Certificate finds witty intelligence and telling truths in this sublimely arresting tale of a modern Chinese family.
