The National Anthem is the 1999 film of Mainland China's "Fifth Generation" director Wu Ziniu (Don't Cry, Nanking), and also the film debut of popular actor Aloys Chen (Painted Skin). The National Anthem depicts how "the Chinese nation faced its greatest peril" during the 1930s, and the efforts and sacrifices made by the intellectuals during the war with Japanese invaders. In particular, the film follows Tian Han (He Zhengjun) and Nie Er (Aloys Chen), the co-writers of March of the Volunteers, which began as the theme song for the film Sons and Daughters in a Time of Storm and was later adopted as the national anthem of the People's Republic of China. Wu successfully recreated the patriotic passion characteristic of the time, and that perhaps explains why the film won accolades at the Golden Rooster Awards, Hundred Flowers Awards, and the Huabiao Awards.
