Not disappointed! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I bought this DVD for my hubby's birthday (he is Australian) so that he could enjoys one of my favourite stories.
We both enjoyed the series a lot, hubby was actually thinking about re-watching some of the episodes!!!

Things we don't like about the series:
- hee hee hee, the 80's special effects are laughable, when the boat to Ice-Fire Island crashed... it was the camera rocking instead of the boat!!! It's very funny and we have a good laugh;
- ooooh, and when Wuji encountered the gorilla in the cave... OMG! I am sure they can do better than that silly costume! (This is the most embrassing moment for me... being a HK girl! How can TVB be so tacky!!!)
- the subtitle overall is great, except I hope they would be a bit more creative when translating characters' names than just using 'pinyin'. For a non-Chinese audience, all the characters' names sound very similar and are quite difficult to follow! For example, the Graphic Novel of 'Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre' by Mr Ma Wing-Shing translated the Ermei's sect leader as 'Priestess No Mercy' rather than 'Priestess MieJue'. Now, No Mercy is much more memorable for the non-Chinese audience and also allow an insight to the character!

All in all though, if you can remember that it is a 1980s local production (try to compare that to 'Bold and the Beautiful' or some other cheap sitcoms in the same era) - you will enjoy the series. The acting is great and the story is excellent. And finally, don't expect the battle scenes to be anything like the books... :)

Impressed Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I have watched all the HSDS series and I think that this is the best one of them all. It follows the novel most closely. Bear in mind that this series is close to 20 years old and graphically it will not be appealing, but the actors do a much better job acting. For all you non-chinese fans out there, the english subtitles on the series really impressed me, it followed very closely to the real dialogue. Much better quality than what you would normally expect from a foreign film. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone that is a wuxia fan

Loved the show Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Bought this DVD set and loved it. It's my favourite show out of the TVB condor trilogy shot in the 1980s and it was great to see it presented in this format, although I am not sure if it is really uncut, as claimed. The theme song has not been digitally remastered and I realise that some scenes are also not digitally remastered - perhaps TVB thought those scenes were mass scenes and did not need to be remastered. This gives the series an uneven quality as you view it, although I must say that ALL the major scenes and ALL the personal dialogue scenes are digitally remastered. The acting by Tony Leung is fantastic and the cast is generally very good. Pace and direction move along smoothly as well. If you bear in mind the constraints facing the making of the series, and given the period in which it was shot, this production comes out very well. Highly recommended.

To the young ones " Xiang" Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
asides from it not being UNCUT series, this is my favorite series. i suggest the same like you, DO NOT BUY, WAIT FOR THE REAL UNCUT VERSION, just have the push the right button to get TVB's attention. Xiang, i mean this in the nice way... In case if you do not know, this was made in 1986, my guess is that you were not even born yet. techonology was not as advance as now, not only that, do you know they have very little budget to work with in these chinese tv series, not to say the least it's probably shot within 2-3 months only? What this makes this a classic is that the actors were brilliant, the storytelling was great, for the less amount of time and money, they were still able to capture the essense of the novel. one of hong kong's film trait is knowing how to stretch a dollar. i can tell you most of us who pick up these classic all know that about the cheezey props/set, and the bad 80's style costume, but we grew up with it, and loved it. for somebody who purchase an 80's tv series and expects 2008 quality... you're mocking yourself. and proved you did not know its these great classics build the foundations or set the bars for tv series made today, that is why you still see most of the actors in this series still big in Hong Kong. Especially, Tony Leung, don't tell me you did not reconize him, he's the lead actor. one of the top actor in Hong Kong now.

Heaven Sword & Dragon Sabre Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
I'll start out with the good:
The storyline was pretty closely followed.

Now the bad:
THE COSTUMES WERE HORRIBLE!!! Why was everyone wearing bright colors? Everything looked like it was made of polyester. The Mongolians were wearing bright orange and black plastic suits for Pete's sake. The set was horrible. The supposed glaciers looked just like Styrofoam [ I wonder why]. The hairstyles were just weird and some of the acting wasn't great either.
SORRY BUT DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!!

THIS VERSION IS NOT UNCUT!!!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
THIS VERSION IS NOT UNCUT, AND THE REASON WHY I KNOW IS BECAUSE THIS IS MY FAVORITE TVB SERIES OF ALL TIME. I GREW UP WATCHING THIS. I HAVE AT LEAST WATCH THIS MORE THAN 50 TIMES OVER THE COURSE MY TWENTY SOMETHING ODD YEARS. THERE ARE SOME SCENES MISSING. THE MOST RECONIZALBE SCENE I CAUGHT MISSING WAS THE ENDING WHEN TONY LEUNG HANDED OVER HIS LEADERSHIP TO ONE OF HIS PROTEGE'. THEY CUT OUT THE PART WHEN HE HANDED OVER THE "HOLLY FIRE PLAQUE" ALONG WITH THE TWO MARTIAL ART BOOK, THE "GOU YANG SUN KUNG" AND THE "KEEN QUN DAI LAUR YE". THEY TOTALLY CUT THAT PART OUT AND JUST HAD HIM SAY IT AND THEN LEFT. HE ALSO HAD A LITTLE MOMENT WITH HIS UNCLE TOO, BUT THEY CUT THAT OUT AS WELL. I DON'T KNOW WHOSE FAULT IT IS BUT THIS IS DEFFINETLY NOT THE UN-CUT VERSION!!! VERY DISSAPOINTED, I NOT SURE IF I CAN TRUST ANOTHER TVB SERIES THAT'S TITLE UN-CUT. I DON'T WANT TO PURCHASE THOSE SERIES ANYMORE UNTIL TVB GETS IT RIGHT. AFTER 20 YEARS I THOUGHT I COULD OWN THE SERIES IN A HIGH QUALITY. I HAD WAITED SO LONG EVER SINCE DVD EXIST. THIS IS NOT RIGHT, YESASIA NEEDS TO CHANGE THE PROFILE ON THIS DVD VERSION.

Quality is better than LOCH Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Just finish watching this DVD set.

There are many sites that have reviews of the story, so I won't bother writing another story line review. Instead, I'll write a review of the DVD quality.

I have "Legend of the Condor Heroes" (LOCH) too. The picture quality is about the same. The first few minutes of "Heaven Sword Dragon Sabre" (HSDS) seems grainy. But the Cantonese audio is better than LOCH. It doesn't fade in and out (i.e. gets softer in some scenes) like it does in LOCH. I haven't tried the Mandarin audio yet. There are 40 chapters, and 10 DVD's. Not every chapter contains the title song. The English sub-title also disappears too quickly in some instances (same as LOCH). I don't know if there were any cut scenes, as I didn't watch the original when it came out in 1986. There are no extras in this DVD set, i.e. no 'making of' segment.

The DVD's come in a flip-book container. Each page of the flip-book contains 2 disc on each side. Thus, one disc is on top of another. This makes it inconvenient to put the discs back in to the container in consecutive order.

Overall, the DVD's are worth the money, if you're a collector.
