"Gakko III: The New Voyage" reflects Japan's economic woes during the 1990s. Sawako (Ootake Shinobu) is canned from her clerical job at an insurance company when her work is outsourced. Takano (Kobayashi Nenji) quits his job as a trader at a major brokerage firm when they announce that all employees over 50 must either retire or be stuck in dead-end jobs. Desperate to find work, they both enroll in a vocational school in order to become qualified to work as building maintenance workers. Both Sawako and Takano struggle not only with their baffling new studies, but also their personal lives. Sawako is a widow with a 16 year old autistic son. Takano, crushed by the loss of his high profile job, wrestles with a drinking problem, a wife who has left him, and a spoiled son who has no respect for him. They turn to each other for the support that has been missing in their lives. "The New Voyage" features a wonderful human story told through director Yamada Yoji's typically thoughtful script. Ootake Shinobu is superb as Sawako; the viewer truly believes that she's been carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders for ten years since her husband passed away. This is a beautiful movie because it feels so authentic and true. I recommend it very highly. |
