When Sally Yeh moves into a haunted Hong Kong high-rise, who's she gonna call? Chow Yun Fat! Five years before their now-classic romantic pairing in The Killer, Yeh and Chow starred in this 1984 horror-comedy hybrid from director Ronny Yu (The Bride with White Hair). The Occupant's evenhanded mix of Creepy and Crazy foreshadows Yu's later work on American horror flicks like Bride of Chucky, and although Chow is operating largely in comedic mode, his role as a fearless police detective looks forward to his later heroic bloodshed collaborations with John Woo. But this is Sally Yeh's show, and her wonderful split-personality performance as a naive student of the supernatural possessed by the ghost of a sultry singing chanteuse is what ultimately makes the film a success.

Sally stars as a wide-eyed Canadian college student named Angie, who comes to Hong Kong to do some field research for her study of Chinese superstitions. She gets a bit more than she bargained for when she rents an apartment haunted by the spirit of a spurned singer. As if fending off ghosts wasn't bad enough, Angie also has to deal with the unwanted affections of a sleazy con-man (Raymond Wong, All's Well Ends Well), as well as the sweet-talking detective (Chow) who vows to solve her supernatural case. Chow requires a little otherworldly help of his own after Angie's body is taken over by the ghost, who's hell-bent on reenacting the murder-suicide that ended her life!

Angie (Sally Yeh) is an undergraduate from Canada who is on holiday in Hong Kong as well as doing research work for her thesis - "Chinese Superstition". While looking for accommodation, she met an used car dealer and property agent, Hansom (Raymond Wong) who instantly became an admirer. The night Angie moved into the flat, she was greatly puzzled by a lady singing in the night and the flower left at her door. Those things seems happened before...

Hauntingly entertaining! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Occupant" is one of those Hong Kong cinema genre mash-ups that we all know and love. This film manages to mix comedy, romance, and horror in an audience-pleasing stew. The film works on just about every level, with snappy dialogue, an engrossing story, a terrific cast, and crisp direction from Ronnie Yu. Chow Yun Fat is dashing as a chivalrous cop, Raymond Wong is zany in just the right doses as a used car salesman/real estate agent who will do just about anything to make a buck, and Sally Yeh is terrific as a naive graduate student studying occult practices in China while fending off Wong's clumsy advances. Lo Lieh also shines in his supporting role. The scene in which he performs an exorcism on Sally works surprisingly well for a relatively low-budget movie. The film is creepy and funny in all the proper places and entertaining throughout. I recommend "The Occupant" very highly.

The story line is quite interesting. The face and staring eyes of the "ghost" is quite spooky too!
